The tragedy isn't that people die; it's that most people never truly live.

There's a truth in there, but it actually looks like its opposite.

In those religions where "eternal life" is part of the doctrine, the fear of death, which is really nothing more than a fear of reality, has been supplanted by a mind-set that negates that reality altogether. In other words, they have convinced themselves that they CANNOT really die. Once you're you've attained this level of reality-negation, "death" becomes nothing more than a temporary inconvenience, a phase of entering "paradise."

Thus, even though you may work up a sweat just before you crash your jet into the tall building, you "know" a "life eternal;" awaits you, and thus you feel no fear at all.

In this way, you may think of the fear of death in these people as so sublimated (and therefore actually so central) that they've managed to come up with neurotic constructs that deny death's existence altogether.

No, it's not very clever, and there are religions who've grown up and accept "the end."

I suppose because it is human to fear death. Some religions though will advocate death. Once you make up your mind to die, I guess you can, even though at the last second you will fear it. I don't think there is any two ways about it. You do fear death. I used to to think I wouldn't be but I know I am. Otherwise, we will be devoid of emotions and don't care about anything. Like I said if you seriously want to die you will be able to do it. There are two kinds of courage, the courage to live or the courage to die. I think it is more courageous to live despite your sufferings.
It is a big deal to try and live and be accountable for all your causes you've made in your life.

Thank you for your question

I think you have that confused. Many religious people do the exact opposite... we do not fear death. We see death as a new life and are always ready. That is why you have to live right by God so that when your day comes you are ready to start a life in heaven. A life much better than you've had here on earth. To Christians.. death is a celebration.

I am not religious and I fear death. I always attributed my fear to the fact that I dont believe in anything and there is nothing else after this life. This is it....and that scares the crap out of me. BUT-- I have been working on that fear.

Just wanted to point out the misconception...i guess

Most people no matter how devout fear the process of dying, the pain that probably will be involved. Also they fear leaving their loved ones and causing pain to them. And very few people will say they've left *nothing* undone, unsolved, unreconciled- most people "aren't ready to go just yet"...
But you're right, those who love and believe in God have no reason to fear what comes AFTER- that's why it's been said "there are no atheists in foxholes."

The First Death (Physical) can be scary since it is unknown and painful (at times). This does show how human we are. But I cannot wait to finally see GOD with my own eyes and be in the presence of the mighty one. I am longing to be in his arms, talk with me, get to know more about everything, walk with him etc.

The Second Death (spiritual death) is fearful to many since it is an entrance to hell for some people. If someone adamantly chooses not to be saved, then it means you decided to have total separation of God.

I'm religious and I don't fear death. Neither does my sister. And its not that people fear death, they simply fear the unknown. And through death there is a lot unknown no matter how religious you are. Also, you have the fear of the method of death, not necessarily death itself.

I have no fear of death I view it as the other side of the door of life.

I was very upset the other day when a friends life was cut short in a house fire...but not fearful.

Why do you assume that religious people fear death?

2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The reason why people feared death is because they don't want to know what is going to happen when THE FINAL JUDGMENT COMES and God and Jesus asked the angel or archangel if their name is in the book of life. If it is, then they will go to heaven, if not, then they go to the lake of fire which burneth with fire and brimstone.
