If they are bigger than a golf ball get a piece of drywall ( you could get a small section from a drywall contractor they throw away pieces that are big enough for what you need) you take the drywall piece and cut it larger than the hole then take a razorknife and cut the brown side the size of the hole then carefully break and remove so that the white side will overlap onto the wall when you place it in the hole. spackle or mud over it then sand and I would primer over the spot before painting otherwise you will see where you repaired it. it will look like a dull spot. If you do the newspaper thing it is just a quick fix and will not be very sturdy. they make a mesh hole repair patch with a thin metal backing you can get at walmart but i dont know how good it works. good luck:)

in addition to the newspaper trick which works great. You can get a roll of mesh tape from the hardware store. Its mainly used to cover cracks in walls but it makes a great platform for the joint compound. Its usually around the drywall and spackle sections.

if the holes are too big for the newspaper or its too hard to get even you can buy small sheets of drywall and cut it to the shape of the drywall. and then use joint compound and that mesh tape stuff to make it solid. (this trick works great if one of your holes reveals a stud, simply screw the drywall to the stud and full in the smaller hole) I hope this makes sense

if there Not too big stuff them with crumbled news paper,
fill the hole to with in 1/2 inch or so, put a layer of spackel on let it dry over night, add another coat, [dont try to build the area up with thick coats, it will take for ever to dry, keep adding coats to get it even with the wall,
