If you can buy your oysters from the seafood market, then notice the oyster just before you 'crack' it. Is the shell slightly open, just a tiny bit, then throw it away, it is no good.
Other than that, I would say to go to the most reputable restaurant in town to order oysters. One where you can watch the oysters being prepped?! Hmmmmm, no, I've never found a restaurant like that either.

Raw? You can hope for a fishy smell - oysters should have a clean, oceany smell. As it slips into your mouth, it should be a clean, oceany taste, also. But sadly, you may not know that it's bad until it's too late, especially if you've put a lot of cocktail sauce onto it...although I've been eating them raw for years and haven't gotten sick yet! Fresh oysters are the BEST!

If it is fresh, it will have almost no smell to it. If it smells really fishy, then I wouldn't eat it.

i think it will be weirdly colored, or just not the color they normally are
or they will be really smelly
