Both are great but they each have their own niche in use and capability. For light line fishing a spinning reel is supreme. For accuracy and power a baitcaster wins hands down (assuming both reels are of good quality). For distance casting a spinning reel with large diameter spool and plenty of small diameter line is the way to go. If you fish lots then you will do well to have both types of reels.

Bait casters have there place, just as spinning reels do.
Depends a lot on what kind of fishing you do.
I use bait casters most of the time if I am using line 12# or heavier. Anything else like finesse (drop shot, shake head, or any bait that is less than 3/8 oz. ) I use spinning gear.
Spinning gear is good for Crappie, Sun fish, extra. or when fishing for bass when light tackle is required.
Heavy cover, or using heavy line go with bait casters.
Bait casters are not better than spinning gear, it all depends on your fishing style and the conditions you are fishing under.
A lot of fishing is personal preference.
One thing that will help a lot when using spinning gear is not depending on the bail to be closed by cranking the handle.
Instead make you cast and manually close the bail, this prevents the line from getting twisted as much.
Good Luck

The bait caster can be a fair bit trickier to use. Spinning reels are fairly simple, it's probably better to start with these. I use spinning reels, and catch plenty.

I grew up using spinning reel. So I'm used to it and I like it. Yet I'm tempting to try a bait caster one day. Those reels look like fun.

I like them both .Most of your tournament guys use bait casters .They are good for flipping and ease of changing the drag , quickly .Plus I think they are more sturdy .The spinning reell is easy to use and some times can cast further .Alot of the spinning reels , the bail wont close every time .

low profile reels will sometimes have smaller spool capacities than round spool designs. Also low/p reels are a little more comfy to use use but to say one is better I cant I use both types.
For spinning reels the ease of learning is simple just rememeber look for anti reverse and ball bearings and a good all round gear ratio!

My father and uncle both say baitcasters are better because they let you control the drag better. I disagree. I like spinning reels because they are less likely to backlash and I have no problem controling the drag. When we go fishing, they spend a lot more time fixing problems so my lures get to stay in the water a lot longer. I never seem to lose more fish than they do, either.
The one advantage that baitcasters do seem to have is that they can cast about 10% farther, but that usually dosen't make a difference as far as I am concerned.
