Ok, so...to keep this official: What is your faith? And does it affect your advice to the following:

My pay day always falls on a Thursday. I do not work for a big company, I am the sole employee of the psychiatrist that I work for. We don't do Direct Deposit, I write out my check and he signs it.

Wed. the Dr. came in, and left saying he'd see me today (Friday). I was all "Ok! See you then." Not remembering that he wasn't going to be here on Thurs. to sign my check, so I didn't think to ask him to sign it early.

Yesterday he offered to make a special run in to sign my check, and I was all "oh no, don't worry about it, you can sign it tomorrow, I'm good." He said that sounded great! (He also had a few MD appts for himself yesterday and one "procedure." )

This morning he calls me, drugged up on painkillers to tell me another MD is on call and he's not coming in. Now I can't get him to answer the phone and I have an unsigned paycheck.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

I am a Christian.

I know where he lives, but if he's been in bed all day, I have NO DESIRE to go knocking on the door only to have MY BOSS answer in his skivvies!

Um, it's been 5 minutes....

Where are all my good online friends?

Jane, good idea theoretically, but he's chased of THREE wives and is currently living alone.

No guys, I wouldn't think of forging his name.

Rachel - I WISH he had a boss - it's a private practice so it's just him!

He isn't trying to stiff me - I keep all of his accounts up, plenty of money plus he loves me to peices. It's an honest oversight due to other circumstances.

I'm a single mom who does not get child support (deadbeat) so unfortunately I've got to make a deposit this evening. I just can't wait until Monday. We've gotta eat!

Ok, I'm NOT destitute, but I ain't rich either. I have automatic payments that will come out at around midnight tonite, or waiting until Monday wouldn't be the worst solution.

Those payments HAVE to clear.

Credit Cards? I used to have two - paid one off and destroyed it. The other one is maxed out and I am paying it off at which point I will destroy it too.

Deke, since you offered, and if you wouldn't mind, I'm kinda liking the storm him and torch the place idea! If only because it made me laugh while I am slowly stressing out to the max.

I agree though, that it looks like I may just have to go over there. I have signed other checks on his behalf before - with his permission. I just wouldn't feel right about it in this case since the check is for me.

Re: Him being "reasonable" and/or "understanding" - he's a psychiatrist. Beyond that I won't say more, infer from it what you will.

I DID IT! I DID IT! I ran right over there (he lives around the corner) and banged on the door. It took several bangs - but he answered. And he signed the check. Thanks y'all for getting me through my freak out session. LOVE YOU ALL!

OH, and he had a robe on, so it was ok. I literally stayed about 20 seconds - just long enough to say "Could you sign this please?"

Well this should be a very good lesson if nothing else. But I would try to go to his house if needed that bad and ask him he will understand I am sure. As for the lesson I would take my change out of my pocket every night and hide it in your dresser or something and every week or two you should be able to build up 10 or 20 dollars this way. After a year you will have enough to hopefully skip a pay check if and when needed. I wish you the best. Good luck and remember a little at a time will go a long way when needed.

Wow that's a really crappy situation you've got there...I'm going to need to ask a couple questions to better assist you. (Hehe that's what they say to me when I call the company I use to outsource payroll at my company for customer service.)

Is your boss the only person who is a signer on the bank account?
If the answer is no, I would try to track down someone else who is a signer on the account and explain your predicament and have them sign the check. I'm sure your boss would understand.
If the answer is yes, I would keep calling him no matter how much I though I might annoy him.

Which brings me to my next question.

Can you (financially) wait to deposit your check on Monday?
If the answer is no and you have not been able to reach your boss, I would drop by his house if need be. After all, all you need is a quick signature.
If the answer is yes, I'd simply wait but still make sure my boss was aware of the predicament I was put in.

I got this cos Rachel starred it. My advice is to knock on his door. He should answer the door fully clothed. If he's stoned enough to answer in his skivvies he hopefully won't remember anyway. When he answers the door apologize profusely and be all sweet, you girls know how, and if his wife's there be all friendly to her as well, and explain the situation and how desperate you are, and hopefully everyone can put this behind themselves.

I honestly don't see any connection between this and my religious views/faith/whatever, but I am an atheist.

Good luck.

Wow,that's a tough one Mel. Forging it might not be a good option, unless your friendship and personal boundries would allow for such. Other than waiting for a possible return call,if you were able to leave a message, would be to ask the stand in MD. what he might be able to do..He certainly should have access to your Boss,in some way. I will be praying that God will work something out...(((MEL)))

That's an unfortunate situation :(

Credit cards wouldn't be able to last you until Monday?

But I'm sure since he would understand just how dire the situation is if you went by his house and asked him to sign it. It's not a big deal.

If he isn't answering his phone, call and leave a message...say "I'm sorry, but I really need to have you sign my paycheck before the weekend because I need to deposit it tonight. I've been trying to get a hold of you, but I guess your ringer must be off. I'm going to need to come over to have you sign and I wanted to give you a heads up. I'll see you at 3:30. Thanks."

Yikes! I have no idea. Is there somebody higher up you can talk to, maybe his boss? If no, keep trying to call. If you need the money to pay bills and it's urgent, then just stop by his house.

Sorry I can't give better advice. I'll give you a star and hopefully my other contacts will see it!

It sounds like an extraordinary circumstance, and if he's reasonable, he would understand why you need the check signed. I say call him, and go over to his place.

If not, I'll be happy to storm his place with a torch and pitchfork.

Well, can you do without your paycheck until Monday? If not, then I would call his wife and explain the situation to her. Ask her if you can bring the check over, give it to her, let her take it to him to sign and then she can bring it back to you at the door.
