Someone stole our water pipes last night at my job; therefore, our whole building is going to be left without water until sometime next week. That means no restroom or anything. Should I still be working right now or should I leave work early?

That is the strangest thing I have ever heard...I can't even imagine how that is possible.

well, I would say leave early. You need water- to wash your hands, to go to the bathroom, to wash your food and dishes and to drink if you don't have a water cooler.

I remember going to a previous job and being the first one there. I went to get water for tea an discovered that the water was not working. I called the President and he already knew and said they were working on it. I told him to let me know when it was fixed because I was going home. he didn't seem to object. But oddly enough, I was the only person not at work that day.

Not sure this should be in the etiquette section but your employer should not be keeping everyone at work if there are no restrooms for anyone to use. If I remember right, an employer is legally obligated to provide functioning bathroom facilities to their employees at all times. If I were you, I'd take some paid time off until the restrooms are working again.

Usually in a situation like that the supervisor should just send everyone home because of the rather larger inconvenience. No one wants to have to drive to the nearest gas station everytime they have to use the restroom. Does your boss WANT to be sued by some overly sensitive employee for making y'all work under such conditions?

Go home early! I think there is a legal issue about this.. Whenever our electricity or water go out we are sent home (from work and school).

Give your maintenance department a tip for me.. use PVC instead of copper! I am remodeling my bathroom and just found out that it is 1/8 the cost and lasts the same amount of time. Bums don't want to steal plastic/pvc.

Were they copper? That has become a giant problem in Las Vegas. Even a local TV station was hit. Meth heads are getting creative with their thievery.
I say that you have every right to go home. I feel for the owner of the business.

Talk to your employer or HR department. If they can't make arrangements for portable toilets or something similar, they probably have to let you go home. Laws vary state to state so don't just bail without knowing what their plan is.
