a clue what he was talking about. If he knew Christ ---he would have been a Christian. (this question is in regards to some of the quotes I have seen that Gandhi supposedly made about Jesus and Christians)---Sherris post http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuOP1EdIZde1PA.X.0cWc.Lsy6IX?qid=20070822163746AA90ILK&show=7#profile-info-InYuf85vaa

Christianity ISN'T the only religion that believed in Jesus. They (we) just believe him to be the son of God. There are other religions that mention Jesus as a wise man, a messenger, and a prophet, nothing more. Check out the Qur'an, Surah 19:30-35.

Plus Gandhi said he could accept Jesus "as a martyr, an embodiment of sacrifice, and a divine teacher, but not as the most perfect man ever born. His death on the Cross was a great example to the world, but that there was anything like a mysterious or miraculous virtue in it, my heart could not accept."

"The message of Jesus as I understand it," said Gandhi, "is contained in the Sermon on the Mount unadulterated and taken as a whole... If then I had to face only the Sermon on the Mount and my own interpretation of it, I should not hesitate to say, 'Oh, yes, I am a Christian.' But negatively I can tell you that in my humble opinion, what passes as Christianity is a negation of the Sermon on the Mount... I am speaking of the Christian belief, of Christianity as it is understood in the west."

Please do some of your own research and learn for yourself.

Ghandi had nothing whatsoever to do with Jesus. If anyone thinks that his beliefs was anything like Jesus, it's because he was a Hindu and that is the oldest religion on the planet. If anything, Jesus probably studied the Hindu religion. Jesus was a Jew, yet his ideas and beliefs were not like the Jews of his day. He studied in Cumran and who knows where else he studied. He only surfaced at the age of 30. It's obviously that his ideas came from other religions.

I believe it was Gandhi that said that he liked what the Bible said and would have become a Christian of it weren't for the fact that he knew some Christians. The point is that we as Christians far too often don't practice what we preach. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

Do you not get the point of the statement? The message of Jesus was a good one. His "followers," however, are not so good at following it. Gandhi's saying he likes the message, but not too many Christians follow it.

I'm sure he had studied the story and message of Jesus.

Christ taught truth. Gandhi taught many of the same principles of truth that Christ did. That is why many people believe that he must have studied the teachings of Christ.

It seems to me that the more one learns of Christ, or at least Christianity, the less likely one is to be a Christian. If all one hears is what those who want you to follow them want you to hear, then you're more likely to be a Christian.

Not true.

Both Ghandi and Christ led an austere life of non-violence.

Virtues bring the cosmos together.

I'm sure Gandhi was aware of christ. What makes you so sure he would have converted?

Perhaps he lived Christ principles better then and there than many USA 'Christians' do now.
