You can try the tomato juice, it will help some, but truthfully, most of it will have to wear off. When I was still living with my parents, my dog and my father both got sprayed, it wasn't fun at the house for a month or so!

1. Before handling your dog, you may want to put on some old clothes. Skunk spray is actually an oil and is very difficult to remove from clothing. Do not let your dog lay in his dog bed or the skunk oils will get on the bed.

2. If possible, leave the dog outside to prevent the odor ridden oils from getting into your house.

3. Determine where the spray hit the dog. Depending on your dog's hair type, you may be able to trim away or comb out some of the affected hair.

4. When you're ready to wash the dog, only clean the sprayed area. Skunk spray is oily and can easily be spread all over the dog. You will most likely have to give the dog more than one bath, so save an all-over bath until the second or third washing.

It may be particularly hard to get the odor out of those dogs who have thick double coats. If quick action is not taken it is possible to smell the odor on your dog for up to two years, especially when the dog gets wet.

There are several products you can buy at the store to de-skunk your dog, which I think work best, but one does not always have them on hand when their dog gets sprayed.

A couple old methods used are saturating the dog's coat in tomato juice or mouthwash and than bathing the dog thoroughly with a canine shampoo. However the effectiveness of these methods are questionable and it is said that the tomato juice will leave your dogs coat all red.

I had a Hungarian Visla for 17 years. The poor fella just did not learn that skunks were bad. He got sprayed at least 5 times. We tried all the remedies. The one that worked the best was real lemons. Roll the lemon on your counter to soften it up then cut in half and rub it on the affected area. We found that tomato juice while it helps a little really smells bad when mixed with the skunk smell.Plus it makes one heck of a mess when the dog shakes. Leave that for a while then bathe in a mild shampoo (baby shampoo is what we used) . Repeat this until smell gets a little better. The worst one was when he actually bit the skunk and it got inside his mouth. He was quite sick for a few days. We just made sure he drank plenty of water and got lots of love...he was a little depressed. The smell will eventually ease. Our Sammy used to roll in the dirt after we washed him and that helped as well. Good luck.

same thing you'd do if you were sprayed with skunk juice - a tomato bath, no water, just tomato paste b/c if you put her in a water bath, the chemicals insiide the skunk spray can spread the smell into the water, and then you have to wash the tub and, it will become an everlasting chain of getting everything you own starting to smell like skunk spray, which, isn't like the scent of lemons and rosemarys....

My best friend's dog just recently got sprayed by a skunk. She soaked the dog's collar in Tomato Sauce.

A friend of mine had that happen to their dog; we used tomato juice and lemon juice ... the acid in the juice cuts the oil for the spray of the skunk. You'll need lots so hopefully you have a Sam's Club or Cosco or bulk store nearby ... poor dog. Good luck ... you can shampoo with regular dog shampoo after using the tomato and lemon juice to get that mess off ... AND WEAR GLOVES ! (and a clothespin for your nose ;))

Here is a recipe for an alternative to tomato juice that is supposed to be an oxygen generator (like Oxy Clean?) They say it works better. You just need a lot of hydrogen peroxide, some baking soda and dishwashing detergent.

The tradional solution was tomato juice.
Stand her into a tub & pour a can over her.
Work it into the fur like a shampoo.
There are also deodorizing sprays.

That worked on my white cat..........mind you she was pink after but the smell was gone...........LMAO
