I don't want to use any artificials or plastics. Just fresh baits.

For bluefish - bunker (menhaden) chunks. Could also use mackerel or herring chunks. By chunks, I mean two-inch pieces cut straight down from the top to the belly.

For weakfish - best is live snappers. Yet you could also catch them on bunker, mackerel, or herring chunks. And on sand worms.

Best Bait For Bluefish

2016-12-11 07:14:24 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

It always depends. Fish just doesn't go after one type of "bait". They have a variety to go through. The best way for you to find out what to use to catch blues and weakies is to ask your local Bait & Tackle store. They would have more knowledge on what to use as your bait.
However, if you'd like to catch blues you can use a Kastmaster lure with a white teaser or any other metal. For weakies, you should use live bait. If you don't want to use live bait use Gulp! with a jighead. I personally use the 4 inch Pink Mullet. As for the jighead, that will depend on the current.

It's unfortunate that you don't want to use artificial lures because they work WELL for Blues & Weakfish.

I agree with Mac: Menhaden "live" on a float rig or "chunked up".

If you are hesitant to use lures because they are tough to "figure out", just try throwing a silver spoon with a bait-strip of Menhaden/Bunker. You can cover more water with spoons, lures, Etc and Blues/Weakfish prefer "moving" bait over "still" bait.

Weakfish love 4" Grunts/Pigfish on a float-rig. They will also take Shrimp, Sailor's Choice, Mullet, and Menhaden/Pogey. Live rigs are the prefered choice for Weakfish.

I can't stress enough how well lures can/will work for certain applications. "Cut-bait" & "Live-bait" work well for active, feeding fish , but , you can get a "reaction-strike" with artificial. It's always a good idea to carry both with you, "just in case".

Here are some good lures: Spoons for Blues W/trailer of strip bait or Berkley "Gulp" strip, (1/2 OZ Johnson spoon's & old Rapala spoons work well).

1/4-1/2 OZ Jigs W/ Berkley "Gulp" or "Powerbait" 4" grub-bodys.

Yozuri Crystal Minnow's in Red-head/White or Chartruese.

It would benefit you GREATLY to have a couple lures handy!

Hope this helped? Good luck!

If you can catch live peanut bunker you will catch some nice Blues and maybe a Striper or Weak.

Snappers can also catch all of the above.

Bluefish Lures

2016-10-20 07:17:25 · answer #7 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Bluefish: Squid, Bunker, or when you catch a small bluefish since theres no size limit in my state i cut them into chunks then I hook them and cast them off. but for bluefish using spoons is the best or plastics because they tend to become more aggressive I believe. use stuff like kastmasters, surfacewater lures, poppers, crippled herring lures, i like the black bomber since its great for bluefish, stripers. but when you go for bluefish you should as stated above use wired leaders so that the bluefish doesnt bite the line off and you lose the fish. during my noobie years i lost alot of bluefish due to that but now im more experienced.

never caught weakfish using fresh except i saw people catching them off bloodworms and sandworms. i use gulp swimming mullets on a jighead and i catch alot of weakfish and fluke. but gulp is artificial. i recommend that you use artificial for these fish especially since gulp alive came out and the lures are reusable after you put the lure back into the bucket which contains that solution. however it is expensive. a pint costs around 30 bucks in my local B&T

I like to use ladyfish.cut them into 2 to 3"inch chunks or whole pin fish..and for weak fish either use 1/2 inches chunks of the same or squid...and use a leader for the Blues and as small of lead as you can get away with or they will hit the lead and cut your line too..Good luck
