Incennse is absolutely NOT required for True Meditation.One should know how to withdraw the cognitive senses from the sorroundings and control the mind to meditate on GOD (Ekaagra Chittam)--incense wii NOT help!!!!

My opinion
The best incenses for meditation are scents that you don't pay too much attention to, they should be subtle scents, never overpowering.
Also the size of the room will dictate, even subtle scents in a small closed room can be cloying.

I think that depends on personal taste. I enjoy sandalwood when meditating.
