Need help with my boyfrieds resume. He is in the Army National Guard and is changing his Civilian Job. I have done resume's, but not any with mostly military training and schooling.

So, if someone can give me any pointers or give me a web site that has example’s that you don’t have to pay for that would be great.
Thank you!

He is went to Fort Knox, Kentucky and is mos is Abrams System Tank Mechanic. He has other mos’ but that is what it is now. I dont even know if any of it applies to a civilian job, but I think that I should be mentioned to explain gaps of time.

Putting in military codes is a waste of paper space in a resume. If he is a 63B, as mentioned above, just list it as a automotive mechanic and how much time. If he was the manager of section of 63Bs, then Lead Mechanic in charge of 4 mechanics responsible for 12 vehicles. Something like that.

If you are close enough to a military base, check with the Family Readiness Center. (everyone calls it something different!) Most will have someone on staff who can help him "civilianize" his military work. There are ways of phrasing things that make it much more compatible to the civilian world. And since he has his ID he should have access to the facilities and the resources there.

Best of luck to him!

Tell him to go to ACAP, http://www.acap.army.mil/, thats what they do, they have all kinds of resources to transelate the training and jobs into a good resume. Besides he can take his mos training papers down to most colleges and get credits for them, also break down what his responsibilties and training was on rather than just what his MOS is or was.

I just went through this with my husband. We paid $400 to make sure we got a good resume. It is very difficult to do one without experience because you have to go through all of their awards, decorations and EPRs. We went to militaryresumes.com.

just treat the resume like any other. when you get to schooling write in 63b10 light wheel vehicle mechanic or whatever his mos is. tell where he trained and how long and what if any degrees he has.
