Animals don't have symbolic minds. They are spiritually similar to us. They love. This is why the Cathars were vegetarians or tried to be. I have to admit I agree in theory but don't practice vegetarianism...yet.

I sneezed while answering this question. That made my cat give me a dirty look for waking him.

For a Christian Biblicist explanation: Animals have souls. Souls are self-conscousness. Animals do not have a spirit, meaning they cannot worship God and cannot have a God-conscious mindset that humans are capable of having.

Why do you need a soul to be able to sneeze?

All you need is some nerves, muscles and lungs... and a source of irritation in the nasal passages.

The funny thing is, is that every time one of my animals sneezes, I say "bless you."
Be it one of the dogs, the cat, one of the guinea pigs, or the hamster.

so sneezing is evidence of having a "soul"?

I thought sneezing was a physiological function of the respiratory system.
