Caine got the nickname after meeting Master Po for the first time. Caine said that to be blind must be the worst affliction. Master Po then showed the young Caine that he was able to hear the grasshopper at the boy's feet which even Caine could not hear. The nickname stuck after that.

Su is correct. The first encounter with Master Po the young Cain was skeptical of receiving training from the blind master who pointed out the grasshopper he was oblivious of and the name stuck.

From what I remember, and it has been awhile. when Cain was a little child, he tried to sneak up to his master, who was holding a grasshopper at the time and drinking tea. So Cain thought he really did sneak up on him and he said "ah Grasshopper, have you came to talk" or something like that. Its been a long time since Ive seen it but its something like that.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess it had something to do with acknowledging that all things in life are sacred and that we, as humans, are no more important that bugs.

I'm guessing that based on what little I know about Buddists and their desire to not kill even the smallest of creatures.
