9lives, the host said that it's proven that the "silent sping" was not a study, it was meely a book and was not accurate, and studies have proven it to be wrong. DDT was the best thing we had.

caitlin, I'll have to see more studies regarding cancer, mutations and accumulation in the body...before I can totally agree with DDT, but, time will tell.

I do not believe ecologists are the scum of the earth at all. I do believe we need more scientists, more biologists, more studies and testing, and alternatives if that's what it takes. Where there is a need we try to fill that need.

DDT is still widely used in the tropics, it was, and still is, the most effective agent against disease carrying mosquitos and flies. If use in moderation and judiciously, it is very effective and safe. Most of the problems in the USA were caused by overuse and poor practices when using DDT.

At one time, malaria was a huge problem in the entire southeast, the Mississippi valley, and up the Atlantic seaboard. DDT is one of the major reasons that is no longer the case.

I think that these tests may be true but in the past DDT was an awful pesticide and we should remember the consequences before we use it again. Is it really worth putting the ecosystem in danger just to be rid of a few pests? I would say don't use the DDT. You may want to getting rid of bad bugs with good bugs.

DDT was deemed unsafe after the finding of "silent sping" the book about a stream that was located near a farm using the pesticide that contained DDT. This pesticide killed the stream animals and benthos, as well as birds that fed from the river.

DDT is still harmful. I wouldnt beleive anyone who says that it isnt.

DDT is still dangerous. it wont ever be safe. tis happens because it cumulates in the tissues of both plants and animals. furthermore,if am animal eats a plant that has ddt in it's tissues the animal will cumulate that ddt and so on.
ddt levels do nut go down that easily and it is the cause for an ecologycal disaster world wide. it can cause cancer and genetic mutations that may cross generations. my advice is do not trust anybody that claims ddt is safe.

DDT will never be a safe substance to use. Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, clearly explains the dangers of the pesticide. They may can cancer in humans, and is a serious threat to wildlife, especially birds.

DDT was even found in the Arctic in the 1970's and had already contaminated so many Arctic species. DDT is a very hard substance to remove and the longer it stays, the more hazardous it can be to the ecosystem and environment.
I, personally wouldn't trust them, as their evidence is most likely very phony.

DDT is not toxic to people but it causes bird eggs to have thin shells, resulting in the eggs breaking before they are ready to hatch and decimating many bird species, some of them endangered. Including Eagles I think.

DDT LEVELS HAVE GONE DOWN. IT IS NEVER SAFE. HALF THE BIRD POPULATION WAS WIPED OUT IN THE U.S. BEFORE WE COULD DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WE LEARNED TO BE MORE CAREFUL WITH THE ECOSYSTEM BECAUSE OF MISTAKES WE MADE WITH DDT AND OTHER TERRIBLE TOXINS, YET WE CONTINUE TO IGNORE THINGS WHICH SEEM COMPLICATED AND WHICH CAUSE US INCONVENIENCE.
