yes, we used to use the liquid on small pieces of cotton and keep in in our beautician's kit (that had implements, curlers, etc in it) and the odor was the cleansing agent.

But my question is does it wash out of clothing. I heard China was using formaldehyde in the clothes they send us to help preserve the permanent press in the fabric.

What is formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling
gas. Commonly known as a preservative in
medical laboratories and mortuaries,
formaldehyde is also found in other products
such as chemicals, particle board, household
products, glues, permanent press fabrics, paper
product coatings, fiberboard, and plywood. It is
also widely used as an industrial fungicide,
germicide, and disinfectant.
Although the term formaldehyde describes
various mixtures of formaldehyde, water, and
alcohol, the term “formalin” more precisely
describes aqueous solutions, particularly those
containing 37 to 50 percent formaldehyde and
6 to 15 percent alcohol stabilizer.

formaldehyde is a colorless gas having a sharp, suffocating odor. It is used in making plastics and, when dissolved in a solution of water and methanol, it is used to preserve biological specimens. i cant think of any reason why it would be in clothing though O.o

its a preservative.
They pump it through your body after you die.
I'm not sure if it completely washes out, but I know I'm not buying anything made in China anymore!
