I have hooked it up correctly to support high definition for games on my 720p panosonic hd tv. I have used the firmware updates and those still dont work. Yes and everything is hooked up correctly, the hdmi cable is in place and everything. Can you please help me?

As the other guy suggests: check the settings -> display settings -> video output settings ->
make sure you've selected the right connector type.
It might pay to reset the settings first (pressing down power button on front till it beeps) just in case there's something you've altered and not noticed (especially if you've been using it on a different TV)

My DLP television won't display 720p correctly either. It will display a 720p television signal correctly, but if I try to have my PS3 output in 720p, all I get is a black screen. It kind of stinks that any 720p games all get downgraded to 480p resolution.

But, the only thing I can suggest to correct your problem is to check the display settings on the PS3s option menu. Make sure that 720p is checked as an option. Like I said, I had to disable the option on mine since 720p doesn't work.

Try going to display setings on the ps3 and changing the display setting to 720 you may have to scroll up to find it... . If that doesn't work change the setting on the tv's menu for input...
