My kid started reading with a lot of encouragement and cajoling ( she doesnt like reading that much but its a school requirement ) recently . i started her off with Margaret Hillert and she loved it and now is stuck to her books only . I need names of books with authors that i can make her read which will be a little more challenging than Margaret Hillert so i can make her progress to step 2 . ( otherwise she is smart and very good at math ) Any names ?

Magic Tree House series (easy); Magic School Bus Series (mixed); Cam Jansen mysteries (medium; there are also "Young Cam Jansen" books that are easier); Nate the Great mysteries (easy); Franny K Stein Books (easy); Captain Underpants Series (easy; you didn't hear this suggestion from me, and definitely don't get it without previewing it and deciding you can live with it, since it almost entirely consists of bathroom humor, but at least you won't need to do any cajoling about it; first graders think it's hilarious); Junie B. Jones series (easy); Ramona series (medium); American Girls books (medium); A-Z mysteries (medium); Flat Stanley books (medium); Fluffy the Guinea pig books (easy).

Ask at your library for more good suggestions. Also, don't overlook good picture books. Your public library will have suggestions for those, too. There are hundreds of picture books that would be interesting and appropriately challenging for first graders.

When my 8 year old was in first grade she loved reading Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park. There are close to 26 books featuring the author Junie B. Jones. I hope that this works for you.

My son loves Junie B. Jones books. He's getting ready to start 2nd grade, but started reading them while in 1st and has pretty much read the whole series now.

There are so many good series of beginning readers. I would recommend visiting your local library to look through them. The beginning readers in our library are separated from the picture books, so it's pretty easy to do.

I love Arnold Lobel's books...he wrote the Frog and Toad books, Mouse Tales, Small Pig, and our absolute favorite, Owl at Home.

Good luck!

Is she part of the AR (Accelerated reader) program? You can google that and several of the schools that participate have the book lists online. My daughter is 7 (2nd grade) and is really into the Junie B books right now.

The I Can Read books are great. They come in different levels. Henry and Mudge is also popular for that age group.
