Okay ladies and gentlemen lets try and not be offended by this, I Know its a touch subject. Just to clarify I am very against discrimination of any kind and I respect people form all walks of life.
Lets all asume for a moment that there is no God (higher power) - Lets aslo asume that the bible and all other religious book are a complete work of fiction. Lets all asume that we have complete legitimate proof and evidence of this and that the whole concept of existance and evolution is compltly scientifically explained.
Religion has caused alot of pain and suffering; would the world not benifit without it. Would it not lessen the likelyhood of wars between nations. Would it erase the whole consept of homophobia and racial conflict completly. Would this create world pease.
I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Obi-wan Kenobi, I respect you point of view, but I don't agree with it. I am an Athiest and I am far form evil. I do what is right not because of God but because I myself consider it to be the right and fair thing to do. You seem to be generalising athiests quite a lot in your statement. Even if some people without any belief systm truly are 'Evil', I'm sure that if a law is set to protect us from such things people will realize that there are consequences for harming other human beings. A states law can function just as efficantly without religion. Religion does not control the law the goverments do. Maybe there was a time when the religious churches had a major role in influencing the government but i think that time has long gone and if that were the case we wouldn't have divorce, gay marrage (not in every country but in some), and many other privliages religion has denyed people. You should think about those things, I know I do.

I think religion exists because people naturally seem to need something to believe in. Human nature. Governments and the powerful exploit this need by creating religions that favor themselves--the divine right of kings and all that.
Also I don't think jealousy, intolerance, nationalism, hatred, homophobia, racism etc. etc. do not originate in religion, I think they are also human nature and religion is used to -justify- them. If it wasn't religion it would be something else.
But I do agree with you that religion causes a lot of trouble. Looking back over the last couple of thousand years of history, at all the trouble that has been caused by religion or justified in the name of religion, I do have to wonder if all that stuff could have been done -without- religion.

Bro,
Religion is the most powerful weapon in the world. The current wars and wars for centuries have been mostly due to religion and religion motivated. We do call Muslim terrorists and not middle easter terrorists.
Then if there is no religion then we wont have to carry a guilt. Religion initiall was created to aviod people taking your property away or fighting with or takign ur girl friend or wife. Just to make it simple its a fear based system to keep the chaios under control when people were mostly uncivilized.
The good idea that religion is dangerous can be understood from how major religions have divided. Someone wanted to feel powerful and created his own sect and that will divide in smaller and smaller groups.
There is no point. While i do believe there is a superior power I do believe reglion is not very neccessary. If our religion and religious leaders really beleive in God. they will preach for us to save the nature of the world that God created for us but what do they tell? They dont care and infact motivate us to worsen the sitaution.
Well thats me. and people are going to give me a thumbs down but this is how I feel.

Yeah, I read your question but religion is not the problem. Man by himself is inherently evil and self destructive. Look around the world. Where have you been? In every place you can think of where they do not want God there is poverty, disease, hunger, death and destruction. If man is okay without God, then why do people who are in turmoil keep looking and trying to find someone in the heavenly realm to help them? Because evil men who don't know God oppress, torture, and take advantage of them. Also, once again it is wicked men who exploit the seeking of God for their own purpose and cause trouble. You will see the same evil works in men who don't believe in God as in men who say the believe in God and condone murder and cause chaos. So, it's people who are the problem and seeking their own twisted goals. It's man all by himself.

I love that song "Imagine".
My thoughts are that we would still have the hatred but it would not have such a broad impact if there were no religion. To me, religion is for the masses and institutions to maintain power. The majority rules. Spirituality is for the individual and it would still exist even without religion. We make choices as an individual and as a group. I'd prefer to be as an individual. No religion, no borders, no nation. Imagine.

At one point in time there was no religion.Religion is a man made phenomonen. The Aztecs were the first to establish the sun as a God. This made sense, because the sun kept them warm and caused the corps to grow. So it would be natural to worship the sun.Other religions evolved over time due to ideology.

You are talking about heaven of course. In heaven there can be no religion. What would be the point? It would be absurd for people to keep attending different churches or mosques or synagogues once they have reached a certain stage of enlightenment. But we have a ways to go before we reach that point.

Whirled Peas! On a Canadian late night talk show I saw "Jones Town" Jim Jones's son. He said religion is for people who are afraid of Hell, spirituality for those who have been there.
