As well as the additional weight on that side, it is partially because the side you buttered is now concave. The air resistance makes it flip over... watch the episode with Mythbusters!

The buttered side of the bread has more mass, and thanks to that being combined with gravity, the butttered side becomes heavier and will be what hits the ground.

Myth Busters tried this myth and disproved it. They tried from different heights and at all heights the bread came within 1 drop of being equal.
