Is there anything i can use to stop my sword from rusting that could be found around the house? I know most people use oils but im guessing vege, sunflower oil is completely different.

A thin film of oil is best. Vaseline would work well, but might be a bit messy.

Absolutely do NOT use WD-40 unless you plan on repeatedly applying it. The product will wash off any protective film and leave the bare metal exposed.

If you want to see the damage that WD-40 will do, try spraying all your garage door rollers with it. Then do nothing for a year and you'll see all the corrosion in the ball-bearings.

If you want to keep your blade sharp and available for regular use, then there isn't any permanent coating. The answer is to put just a little light lubricating oil on a cloth and rub the blade with it. Do this regularly (at least monthly) and you should keep corrosion from recurring. If the blade is just for display then try a clear nail polish. The link takes you to one of many sites on sword care.

WD 40. This is what this product was originaly intended for. WD stands for water dispersant. It as actualy a gummy film mixed with an organic solvent. The solvent penetrates small gaps well, and for this reason, it is commonly used as a lubricant. It is actualy not a very good lubricant. When the solvent dries, it gumms up.

If it's a high quality sword, it'll naturally resist 90% of rust. Still, your best bet is to keep it away from air. Put it in some sort of air-tight container.

I reaffirm the previous suggestion of WD40! Great to protect those metal surfaces!
