You would come into the army as a specialist not as a private. You would be considered a specialist due to your experience with the NYPD and LAPD. Your pay grade would be that of an E-4. which is about $1,663 per month. Plus additional allowance if you are married and have a family. You may qualify for additional bonus due to your experience and if that experience is equal to what the army is currently looking for. You may also qualify for a very generous enlistment bonus of $40,000. However, if you already have a college education and such experience then I would suggest that you go in as an Officer. As an Officer your rank would be second lieutenant with a pay of $2,416 per month.
Take this old Navy Doc's advice: Whatever you do get all the facts before you sign that paper and make sure you get the most you can from them.

The devil is in the details. 10 years total? What kind of classes did you have and where. If you were at one for a short time the level of you classes would be low. Some college or sometimes certain classes can be converted to college credits.

With experience or just some credits you could go in and be an E-2 . And yes pay would be minimal. If single who cares? If married balance out free housing and medical.

For one with maturity and a background one can move up faster. You might think that you could make more money w. DHS or something. But even a short stint in the Army could give you entrance to agencies that you never thought of and 10 times more money later. With more maturity you could have a better chance to apply for better things within the Army. Ultimatly meaning more pay now and later.

The key is not in how much money you make now but in what MOS you pick and what deal you make in order to be positioned properly later..... to be successful and make big bucks.

If you enlist, you'll go in as a Private and your pay will be pretty darned low. If you have a bachelors degree and you're under age 35, you can apply for a commission and you'd start as a 2nd Lieutenant if you're accepted, once you get through Officer Training School.

Right now a Private starting out in the Army makes $1,203.90 a month, whereas a 2nd Lieutenant makes $2,469.30 a month.

P.S.: One word of warning -- if you enlist in the Army, your chances of going to Iraq or Afghanistan are 100% unless they start pulling the troops out very soon.

They are running short on officers so you may find that path easier to get into. Do you have a college degree? Talk to the recruiter about officer training. Remember that he's just looking to make quota so don't buy any promises unless you get it confirmed and in writing. Good luck and happy hunting.

Youd go in as the highest rank because you kick all terrorists butts! Oh yeah and McClane is spelled wrong in your username

if you have college credits, you could get in as high as E4. your job experience would only be of limited benefit, as the military does things very differently than civilian police departments.

I know a recruiter and he said he can get you in as a specialist. How are you with defusing bombs?
