The best handgun? Not interested price wise at all???
Well then look at the H & K USP in your choice of calibers. The .45 acp does nicely as a home defense weapon especially with pre-fagmented ammo. Personally I am fond of the Glock line and sleep with a Glock Model 20 .10mm w/night sides within arm's reach.
You say you're not avid about revolvers, but a .357 Magnum is hard to beat as a defensive weapon. I own a couple of Pythons, a Smith Model 28 and a stainless Ruger Security Six with 2 n 3/4" barrel that is a night stand gun.
Pick what is right for you and practice, practice, practice...

Well as far as far as a general all purpose handgun goes, that isn't a revolver, I would have to say the 40 S&W Glock 22. The .40 S&W ammo equals the 9mm in performance but has much more stopping power. The clip size is larger than the more powerful .45 ACP and the gun is relatively easy to shoot. Plus you can't beat the durability and reliability of a glock. It may not be the perfect gun for you specifically but as far as a general firearm goes it's very hard to beat.

Depends on what you want to do with it. A .22LR is nice because you can shoot it all day long without spending too much money. If you want to get into competition pistol shooting a .22 is good for that too. If you want one for home defense, get a .45 ACP (I like the M1911). If you want to hunt get a .357 mag (.45 works too). My personal favorites are a Taurus M1911 (.45 ACP), Sigsauer P220 (.45 ACP), or a Smith and Wesson Model 41 (.22LR). I have also heard the Springfield XD is pretty good.

I personally like Para-Ordnances line up of handguns, 1911 style, a variety of calibers and frame sizes. Great looks and superb functionality, and excellent quality.

There is no substitute for a Glock 20. The 10mm is an awesome cartridge that most people are foolishly ignoring.
Ted Nugent carries a Glock 20 when he hunts in Africa and killed a charging Cape Buffalo that was trying to kill him with one shot.
If it's good enough for Ted then it's good enough for me, and my Glock 20 is in my pocket now. I don't leave home without it.

The absolute best commonly available pistol is the SIG Sauer P229.
Far better than Glock, better than the SA XD, slightly beats the HK.
