Of course it isn't 100% religious. There are religious weddings and non-religious weddings. And the funny thing is, anyone who wants their marriage recognized in the US, must first go to a Gov't Office and obtain a License to do so.... whether they belong to a religion or not (and it doesn't ask what religion a person is or check into it to see if the wedding follows any religious guidelines)... As far as the Bible is concerned... there isn't a thing in there that shows Marriage as it is done in our society today. (Besides, their "religious" ceremonies are 90% Pagan)

I think you are correct in that marriage is not 100%a religious institution. However I do believe that "marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children."

marriage started as a political institution, and continued to be used that way until modern times. look at the royal families, and how marriage is treated in non-christian societies. it's usually about uniting tribes or acquiring power thru the bride. sometimes, it's simply about enslaving women. the god thing came in to guilt the women into accepting second-class status.

Marriage cannot truly be understood without religion. Nevertheless, it should come as no surprise that non-religious folk see the obvious benefits marriage provides.
In the book of Genesis we learn that God made man in His image. By this it is meant that God made us male and female in order that they could join together in an act of love to create a family. We know through scripture and tradition that the essence of God is in fact a family. This act of unification, or sex, only realizes it's full potential through the bonds of marriage. This is because in order for sex to be an act of love it must be free, total, faithful, and fruitful (open to pro-creation) all at the same time. These elements can only be achieved at the same time through marriage.
This article explains it far better than I can.

Here's another interesting one about Christ's spousal gift on the cross. (A bit shorter).

Marriage between one man and one woman was designed by God, when He created Adam and Eve.
Each country has their own set of laws regarding marriage, thus civil ceremonies are a reality.
My husband and I were married in a Judges chambers and it was very intimate. The judge even prayed. It could be called a civil ceremony, but God was definitely an invited Guest.

It is a union before God, true!
The question is:
Would there have EVER been such a thing
as marriage without religion?
I don't think so...
