That depends what you mean by "average". Average at high school will not cut it. Average in college might.
All engineering fileds are demanding.
It has to be, people's life depend on those things working right.

Computer engineering? ... as in programming?
Well, it depends on the "average student" there can be an average student who prefers and excells in language and art studies, while another average student who prefers and excells in mathamatic and scientific studies.
Computer engineering is for someone who is interested in math and science, and logic. If you don't like logic, or if you don't like math you will suck at programming. If you like that though, it comes as natural as speaking to some people. Even if you don't enjoy math or science or logic, it is still relatively simple to pass a programming class, it may be a little more difficult or dull for them, but it is still not hard. I would say yes, easier for some than for others but still easy.

Computer engineering involves electrical engineering and computer science (software engineering). You need to be great in math, with a focused mind.
