Black Talon ammo is NOT, nor has ever been "cop killer ammo." IT is being confused with something else that does not need to be mentioned here where the info. will fall into the WRONG hands.

Black Talon was the brand name of premium Winchester defensive ammo known for the wound channel it produced. After some fool went on a shooting spree on-board public transportation in a big US City with a couple of P-89s and killed and maimed a bunch of unarmed civilians Winchester willingly pulled it from the shelves. Supposidely it is NO longer available to civilians however...

Winchester continued to produce this product under a different brand name (to avoid the hype) and geared sales toward the Law Enforcement community. IT HAS NEVER BEEN 'COP-KILLING' AMMO. Decent soft body armor stops it as well as other quality defensive ammo.

Is it still available??? Yes and no... The SXT is the re-named ammo geared for LE sales. Black Talon can still sometimes be found here and there if you look around.

Best.

Black Talon Ammo Prices

This was a terriffic case of how facts can so easily be trumped by hype. There was little or no ballistic information to support the "cop killer" name these shells were given. It was truly comical if you knew even the basic facts around these coated bullets. The manufacturer quickly realized they were far better off to abandon the product line. Lawyers would have feasted on them in every instance of a Balck talon shell being used, even in perfectly legal situations. Sad really.

I still see boxes of black talon ammo at gun shows. the price is very high because they are somewhat scarce. Ask yourself what you want them for. As I said, using them in a real life shooting would result in legal woes you don't really want.

I suggest any other reputable brand of personal defense ammo. For example : Star Fires (my favorite), SPEER Gold Dots, Winchester Personal Defense Loads (PDL's), and probably several other good ones. the key is to buy plenty, and practice until you can't take it any more. Then take a week off, and do it again. Wear eye and ear protection. shoot safely and responsibly.

Best regards.

When Black Talon was released it was released to the public however it caused an uproar from the gun haters so the company pulled it and restricted its sales to law enforcement only this was not a law but a company "law" However it is not being produced anymore Having Black Talon ammo is not illegal in any way its just really hard to get

Remington is now making an even better round than the black talon. Once the liberal left press labeled black talon a cop killer it was all over. It was just a nice hollowpoint but they don't ever seem to be bothered with details or facts; just rhetoric as usual. Try some of the Remington fodder, it's good.

If you want to find actual Black Talon ammunition you'll have to find it at a gun show, garage sale, etc. The good news is that Black Talon didn't actually go away. The current generation of Black Talon isn't black and it isn't called talon. It is Winchester Ranger SXT. There have been a few modifications over the years and the Ranger SXT is intended for Law Enforcement only, but it isn't particularly difficult for civilians to find and buy.

Product was sunk by unfair PR. There was nothing particularly evil about them, hell, bullets are supposed to kill people.

I like Federal's Hydra Shok in my .38, 9mm and .40sw. I'm sure some of the other brands are good, this is just my preference. Used them for years and had no issues with them.

about 7 years ago Winchester decided it was a good PR move to only sell to law enforcement. I don't think it was outlawed in all states but due to all the negative press. we don't see it any more on the shelves.

Isn't black talon ammo also known as cop killer? Cop killer bullets are illegal for purchase to the general public.
