Go to the tag office & bring all of the paperwork from the sale. Anything proving ownership. If the previous owner cannot be contacted within 30 days, a title will be issued to you. This all depends on the proof you have. If you don't have any documents stating that you purchased it from this guy than you might be screwed. Lesson Learned

What you need to do is to finish all your paper work and then submit those papers to your local DMV or DPS office. The most important thing that you need to have is the old title from the previous owner (with his signature) at the back of the title you need to fill-in the new information necessary to prove that your the new owner.

The title will be mailed to you by the DMV or DPS after you have finished all the requirements. Go and check the website of the DMV.org for more information.

The only thing though, I remember is that when the previous owner has a lien or a special license plate, that will complicate the matter a bit because you need to have all the signatures.

Be sure that you have all the necessary papers and that's it! Going to court will not help you in any way....its just a DMV or DPS matter...no need to go to court!

You can usually get a title for the car by going to your local tag office. You'll need to go in there and tell them that you recently purchased a car but you don't have the title. Make sure that you have a signed bill of sale. This will be needed in order for them to request a new copy of the title with you as the owner.

If the title has any leans, like if the owner of the previous car had a loan on the car and the bank somehow still has a lean, this will need to be taken care of before you can get the title, but your tag office will be able to tell you if there are any leans on the title and what you will need to do to request a new title.

You should be able to get a new title from your local DMV, or tag office, depending on what state you live in. You will probably have to pay a transfer fee and, if there are any liens, or outstanding payments on the car, you may have to pay them off.
