I just received an article with this heading in my email.

Has anyone received it and read it too ?

I always thought that the parachutist always packs his own parachute. You can't pack someone else's.

Am I right ? If so, then the article does not make sense?

I am assuming that the parachutist is a fighter pilot or a sky diver or something like that.

The rules for packing a skydiving rig (dual parachute system, one main and one reserve parachute) or a pilot rig are similar.

for a pilot rig and the reserve parachute in a skydiving system an FAA Riger has to inspect and pack the parachute every 120 days or after use.

The main parachute can be packed by a rigger and then jumped by anyone. it can be packed by a person under the direct supervison of a rigger and then jumped by anyone. Or the skydiver who will be jumping the rig can back their own main.

the rules for the reserves are followed very closely, the main parachute rules are a little lack. I pack my own main because I'm cheap and don't want to pay anyone to pack for me. I can use that money for skydives!

My dad had to do it for other people when he was in the military years ago. They had a rule that if it looked like it was packed incorrectly then whoever packed it had to jump with it. My dad said he was terrified but never had to jump from a plane.

Folks that jump as a hobby typically pack their own chutes, after being well trained. Folks that fly as a profession typically do not, rather their chutes are packed by professional riggers.

I have never had my parachute packed and I am not that kind of guy. ( Nor have I had my nap sack stuffed)
