Not being part of this world means things like
Not mixing socially with others without faith.
Not celebrating pagan events
Not getting involved in politics or voting
Applying bible principals in all you do.
Remember Satan is the god of this world.

If you want to become a scientist, then become one, it doesnt mean that you are not a christian or religious. If God has opened a door for you to practice science then He has His reasons, maybe for you to discover something on a new level. As far as other life? If so, they have their flying ships that can travel the speed of light and they may think our God is the greater God, mmm no, God is God, He created all that there is and its our calling to learn about these if we choose to do so. God will not condemn you if you know a 1/4 of what he knows, its a big universe out there, and He still wont be jealous because you have learned what was on the the other side. Learn all you can God is ok with that. You cant create anything that God doesnt already know about you can only make it better!

CAVEAT: I am a Jesus Freak, and speak from a Jesus Freak perspective. I don't speak on behalf of God on this, but I can address it from a rational point of view.
I believe that God created humanity, and that curiosity and a desire to expand human knowledge is a part of how we were created. So I say pursue knowledge. If Christianity is true, then it will stand up to scrutiny.
As you discover new information, some of what you find will challenge your faith. Keep in mind that the pieces of the puzzle eventually fit together, but the relationships are not always immediately obvious. Spontaneous Generation is a good example. Given the information available at the time, scientists concluded that rats were made from wet grain, because they always saw rats around wet grain even when they thought the grain was secured and rats couldn't get to it. Later research proved that it wasn't the grain, we just underestimated the ability of the rats.
As far as your ultimate purpose on Earth, remember that the God who created you didn't just toss you together because it was a slow day and there was nothing better to do. You have a purpose here. There are people to reach. Some of them need to hear the message from your perspective. As a man of science who is also a man of faith, you will move in circles that the average minister has no access to. It may be that only one person finds his way to Christ through you, but keep in mind that the only person Andrew ever lead to Jesus was his brother Peter.

Am glad to hear of 'new' Christians witnessing! When watching "God's Warriors" on CNN last night, my husband remarked how the Christians in America get so fired up and alive when talking of God, compared to how calm and reserved the Muslims were portrayed the night before. I agreed totally that to be "on fire for the Lord" makes you more alive...enjoy the life He has given you. The Bible does say there is also a "time to dance". Read Eccles. chapter 3. So do it; rejoice! Moderation is the key to good Christian living, aside from illegal drugs, etc. "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man." Matt.15:11 Prayer is the key to obtaining knowledge from the Lord; pray when you have a question of 'should you'? And God gave us the brains to obtain all knowledge; if it is there to know, we will know. Good luck and don't be afraid of posting more questions as you grow in the Lord.

I am a born again Christian, and have been so for about 29 years. I served as a helicopter pilot in the Army. I am received a Masters in Electrical Engineering, and am pursuing a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering.
I see my studies as discovering the amazing things that God has created. I marvel at life itself...consider this...we have no idea what life really is. We cannot bottle it and sell it. We can only identify the typical symptoms of life, like movement, etc. Nevertheless, there are billions of humans, not to mention animals, that are alive throughout the world right now, filled with life. On top of that our bodies are perhaps the most complicated machine ever! It not only adapts, but self-heals! It grows and learns! There is no reset button, no on/off switch, no programming to be done. And it goes on typically for 70-80 years! When that child is born, it is on...it is growing...it is adapting...it is learning...amazing! And this happens thousands of times everday in every part of the world -- not some factory!
Quite honestly, when I write my software code at work, I am experienced enough to NOT expect it to work the first time. It trakes alot of debugging. My code is complex, but nothing like the development of a human. I am amazed. To think that we evolved from amino acid goo is ludicrous. It is a theory void of God attempting to explain reality. These type of things are publically taught, and you need to answer the questions as people expect. But in your mind, you know the truth. And whatever sphere of influence God gives you, you ought to influence it with the truth.
Being able to discover God's world is truly a privilege. I encourage you to be that scientist. And thank God all along the way. If earth is but a shadow of heaven; who knows the amazing things we shall discover in eternity?

He said that to let us know that we are not to get ourselves caught up in those things that the offers like sinful pleasures and look forward to our final place in Heaven with Him.
We are new creatures in Christ Jesus and are heaven bound with that day comes.
He did not say that you could not have a life here on earth.
There are a number of Scientist who were not believers and are now because of the evidence. You can be a Scientist and still be a Christian.

A Christian does not have to be afraid of truth. All truth will lead to God. Scientific knowledge is not incompatible with the truth of God. Certainly there are frameworks of interpretation (evolution) that are wrong, but the scientific data itself is not wrong. Science itself was begun by Christians. They reasoned that since God is a God of order, he has created an ordered universe that can be discovered in an orderly fashion.
Therefore be fearless but discerning. Beware of deception but seek the truth in sincerity. The framework of truth given to you through the Bible will help you immensely in understanding and organizing all of the truth in the universe.

God wants you to live your life and be happy. So do it. That is why you are here (and most will tell you to glorify God). But I'm not very religious, so I will stick with this:
I wanted to help you with your science question. Many scientists are extremely religious. The reason they are still scientists, is because they are able to separate Science and Faith in their life. Sort of like keeping your professional life and your private life separate. They are two very different ways of thinking, but they are compatible. Especially if you are not too fundamentalist. Just imagine God was the reason behind the big bang, and you'll do fine.

Dear one - you have many lovely answers ahead of mine that already speak my own heart - so let me simply remind you of this:
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33-34 More than anything else, put God's work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well. (Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness.) Don't worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today.
Secondly - a gentleman speaking for his team's research into outerspace at NASA recently commented on his new found belief in Christ:
"We searched the Universe for the answers to life on this planet... we climbed the mountain of scientific discovery and experimentation - only to reach the summit, peer over the top and find thousands of theologians have been camped out on the other side for centuries!"
Lastly - a minister named T.W. Hunt recently spoke here in my town and related a letter he received from a Harvard professor who had guided a research team many years in searching for proof of evolution. Their experiments - instead - disproved the possibility of evolution over and over. He wrote Dr. Hunt a letter beginning with, "You now have a lab FULL of new believing Christians!"
Honor God - fear nothing in this world. Serve Christ in all things and follow where He leads you dear one.
Peace.

we are not 'of this world' but we are IN this world for now.... we are not just 'going thru the motions' til we go Home.
what we can expect is to serve God by sharing the Word with people, either by words, deeds or how we live our lives.
I know many Christian scientists, you can be in science and still know that God is your God. The Holy Spirit will guide you in your path.
If you have a relationship with God thru Jesus Christ, you will know what God wants of you and your life.
Does God want us to know things? of course.... will we know all things? no.. because our understanding is not God's understanding... and what we deem as important may not be important in God's eyes at all

Finally! A decent question asked by a person who actually uses their brain for something other than a sponge to soak up other peoples inanities. You are here to do what you can to make yourself, others around you and the world a better place for all. If you achieve that goal to your own satisfaction, when it is time for you to move on, you will reach a higher understanding of spirit and soul. In my opinion and many years of thought on this subject.
