Let's clear this up.
A) It's not a gun, it's a weapon.
B) An academy is a school for those that are training to become future military leaders, but a school nonetheless. What school do you know of that GIVES students weapons.
C) The military never GIVES you a weapon, you are issued it. Which is a method of loaning you the weapon and making you responsible for using it, maintaining it and properly storing it when not in use. To whit, there is an arms room where weapons that are issued are usually stored, well away from the ammunition that the weapons would normally fire. Which by the way, has to be ordered through the proper channels and accounted for both before and after being issued (in garrison, or near permanent headquarters for normal folks.)
So, in answer to your question:
No, its not given, it is temporarily loaned under very tight scrutiny.

Sunshine, the only things they give you at the military academies are chewing gum and hard times. I can guarantee that they will be completely of chewing gum when you arrive!
Really, most militaryacademies ISSUE their cadets a drill rifle which will most likely be a M14, but it is not uncommon to be given a M1 or M1903 because this is your parade ground piece. You know the one you'll do "Trail Arms", "Port Arms", "Left Shoulder Arms", "Right Shoulder Arms",
"Present Arms", "Order Arms" and all that other happy stuff that makes your arms sore in the midday sun.
For tactical exercises, cadets will mostly be ISSUED a M16A2 rifle or a M4 Carbine to run around in the deep dark woods. They will either belong to the Academy or the Army, Army Reserve or National units that provides training support for the school. ISSUED is the key word in this text, you might have a short term issues of the tactical training weapon or a long term issue of the drill weapon lasting for as long as you in that Academy.
At the end of the training day you're going to turn in that tactical weapons to the unit armorer or when you leave the academy for good you'll turn in your drill weapon to the academy's armorer. Nobody, nowhere in the military is going to give you a free gun.
If somebody does offer you a free weapon, be very, very careful of your next step because one or more people are going to go to JAIL! End of military career......

Oh yeah you get a cruise missile just for joining because here at the ARMY we are GUN CRAAAZY!!!!
YAAAA
No you are never ever given a gun in the Military you may be issued one to use for a while but then you have to put it back. If you want a free gun join a gang.
BTW the UCMJ (Uniformed Code of Military Justice) has stronger Gun control laws then the Federal and State systems. It’s easier to respect a gun when you see what it looks like when you inject something/someone with brass.

It's a drill piece. A deactivated Rifle used for marching. Not a free gun. Actual arms are found at the range for training. Academy is the spelling, by the way.

Jeez, I hope they don't give you a gun!
Guns are big things, pal. If they issued you with a firearm it would almost certainly be a rifle - maybe also a pistol.
You'll have your own gun with you when you go - it's called a 'mutton gun'................(your penis!).
As they say:- This is my rifle, This is my gun, This is for fighting, This is for fun!
