I took French in 6th grade for one year, but my grade for that course was a low 86-88 for my standard. I went back to Chinese for 7th and 8th grade since I'm in 8th grade. But now that I am back in the states for high school (boarding school) my chinese placement got me into Honors Chinese which is supposed to be 11th graders. My mom and aunt won't stop nagging me about changing the language to Spanish or French. What should I do? Please tell me whether or not I should change my language! If so, which language should I take and why. I know boarding school's going to be HARD but if I take a new language, what if it makes my GPA low? AHHHH! Help!

Chinese is a perfectly good language, so you should continue taking it if you want to. If you are worried about your grades, talk to the teacher or a school counselor and share your concerns that you may not have been placed in the right class. If you want to study Spanish or French go ahead and switch. All languages are good.

If I were you, I'd stick with chinese. In a few years, China will be doing serious business, will be a great power, and those who are able to communicate in Chinese will have more job opportunities.
However, if you prefer spanish, take spanish instead, don't think about what may happen, think about what you like.

the ability to learn a foreign language depends on three things 1.) motivation 2.)resources 3.)ability to understand(listen and speak) the foreign language sounds. grammar, and vocab can be easily learned and mastered if you can watch tv in the foregin language and understand it. vocab and grammar will come natuaral if you understand the sounds. My advise is

1what language to you most want to take?(motivation?)
2. Look for some good resources(not your foreign language teacher who is not even a native speaker of the language). Watch tv in the language, and find some native speakers to practise with.(resources).
3. Listen and repeat. (sounds).

if you have these three things you can master and easily ace any high school foreign language class.
