KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Florida: The space shuttle Endeavour glided to a safe landing here at 12:32 p.m. Tuesday, apparently not much worse for wear.

A look at the underside of the Endeavour appeared to support the decision made by mission managers to let the craft re-enter the atmosphere without first having its crew try to repair a small but deep gouge in two of the heat tiles on the underside of the right wing. The decision was made after days of analysis and worry about the potential hazard posed by the gouge, and the risk that a repair attempt would do more harm than good.
