do people often confuse colored diamonds for gemstones? i'm debating a colored diamond in an eternity band, but i don't want to pay for fancy diamonds if people will think it's just a band of gemstones. i wanted something traditional (eternity band) with a twist (colored stones). should i just stick with regular white diamonds?

also, i am a sociology student conducting an anonymous study on marriage. visit: http://geocities.com/sbiv37/marr to participate.

obviously i'm not trying to "show off" the ring. it's not like i'm going to walk around with my hand out just waiting for someone to notice. however, we all pick rings that we love and that we think others will like. i don't want my yellow diamond to look like a citrine $30 gemstone, that's my only point. not that i need people to fall all over themselves fawning over it.

lydia, my questions are real. you will notice that i included a link to the colored diamond site that i am looking at and that all of my questions are on the same topic: deciding on a new ring.

also, the link provided isn't considered spam. i am not selling anything, only explaining that i am conducting research and would love people's input. since i would like an accurate study that is reflective of people's views of marriage, i need at least 2000 responses. to get that number, i must post the link to so that people know about the site. i'm not sure why you consider that spamming since i do contribute to yahoo! and i do answer questions. perhaps you have had a bad experience with a true spammer, but you seem drawn to responding to my questions. it's kind of like cyber stalking.

Yes, I imagine many people will assume your colored diamonds are other gemstones.

If that's going to upset you, then use white diamonds.

If you'll be content even if others think you're using 'lesser' stones in your ring, then get the colored.

In the longrun, it's a matter of your taste and your priorities. After all, it's your ring going on your finger representing your marriage. It should be what you want, regardless of what anyone else is going to think of it.

That's why my engagement ring is a silver frog prince: because it's what I liked and I didn't care whether anyone else thought it was right, wrong, or completely silly. The thing that matters is that it makes me smile every single day of my life.

Pick the ring that will make you smile every time you look at it, and let others think what they will...they will anyway.

I think most people mistake colored diamonds for gemstones. If and when I ever get engaged, I want a huge yellow diamond ring. (Yellow is my favorite color) But knowing that would cost a fortune, I would gladly settle for citrine with white diamonds on either side.

For your eternity band, I think I would go with gemstones. If you can't tell the difference, then there really isn't a reason to spend so much money on colored diamonds.

Yes, people will think they are mere gemstones. This is reflected in the answers you've gotten. Someone will say "Oh, let me see your ring." You'll hold it up, and the person will say (or think), "Oh, is that citrine?" When you explain that it is actually a yellow diamond, the person will likely think you're lying. Or, they will think that your hubby didn't have the money to get you a "good" diamond and had to settle for a yellow one. Or, they'll believe you and be impressed. But chances are that most won't have heard of colored diamonds or their value.

I don't know where you get your citrine's from, but I have never had a $30.00 citrine! LOL. Anyways, colored diamonds are soo beautiful, although some DO look like gemstones, you want to stick with a canary, pink, or blue diamond. The blue is soo beautiful, almost a teal. I for one, would find a stone that meant something to do the both of us, may it be his and your birthstone's or your favorite. Everyone does the diamond thing..

I think that if you want a coloured diamond, what does it matter if other people would think its a gemstone...

I kind of think that coloured diamonds are over priced, and I actually like the idea of non-diamonds gemstones in engagement they are actually MORE traditional than diamonds (diamonds only became popular in early 1900's), I also find gemstones more sophisticated (ie: everybody else gets diamonds, but an aquamarine is so lovely), and they are usually not used to fund illegal activities in third world countries

I saw some coloured diamonds on bluenile, I would highly recommend their website, my fiance has bought me items from them including a great bracelet, necklace, and my engagement ring, we also intend to buy our wedding bands there. Their diamonds are also conflict free....

would you not want a larger size diamond if people thought it was a cubic zirconia?

Colored diamonds are extremely expensive - even the little ones that would fit in a channel ring. If that is what you have your heart set on, and you can afford to purchase it, then go for it!! Don't be surprised, however, if someone asks what kind of gemstone it is or makes a guess as to what they think it is. And once you do tell them it is a colored diamond - don't be surprised if they don't believe you.

I once commented to a woman who was recently engaged about her fancy yellow diamond side stones. She started to argue with me they were not fancy yellow diamonds, until her husband to be responded yes they are.

Do not let other people ignorance effect your choices.

Would you not get a large diamond because some people may think it is a CZ.

There also are diamonds that are real but lab created. Still expensive but less than the natural fancystones. They can introduce impurities to make pink, yellow and blue diamonds. You may wish to go this route.

How about mixing the two diamonds on the band? So that the colored diamonds are an accessory to the diamond engagement ring and the other diamonds in the band, That's what i did with my rings. i love sapphires so i mixed up the two, diamonds and sapphires.

If you don't want it to look like a $30 gemstone and you think it might then don't waste your money, buy a $30 gemstone!
My eternity ring is a purple tanzanite and I don't think it was that expensive but it could have cost £1 and I'd still wear it as I love it and I love the fact that my husband bought it for me himself

I don't think that colored diamonds look anything like gemstones. White diamonds are more common because they are easier to come by. Naturally colored diamonds are rarer and therefore more expensive. If your fiancee cannot afford a naturally colored diamond there are always irradiated diamonds. This is a white diamond that is irradiated to give it color.
