I would like to go to NY on a train but have no clue how to do it. I really want a package deal that includes a hotel. Just want to go to do some cheap shopping, knock offs, etc.

The cheapest month to travel and shop in NYC is February. Once the holidays are over, store prices go way down. The only trains going directly into Manhattan are Metro North at Grand Central Station and the Long Island Railroad at Penn Station. You also could take the New Jersey Transit or Path train into Manhattan. If you are traveling from outside the NY Metro area take Amtrak. Package deals are usually for airplane travelers.
