Miniature Schnauzer or a Miniature Pinscher. I have both and love 'em! They are both playful. The Pinscher is smaller but she is also more hyper and doesn't really like to listen too well. My Schnauzer on the other hand will still play even though he's 8 years old but he has always been the obedient type.

Boston Terrier!! They rock! They are very playfull even inold age. Very easy to house break. Eager to please owners. they are said to be #3 in the top 10 akc/ckc etc.. of the smartest dogs. You want to get a well breed one no inbreeding, loving homes etc... be wary of a B.T that has 2 blue eyes (with black and white hair) theres a chance they can be deaf. Also for ones that are mostly white (deafness also) If your not wanting one for breeding or show quailty then a blue eyed/ mostly white are beautifull!! good luck

Get a Beagle. They are energetic and love to play. There is not much that is cuter with the big long ears and big brown sad eyes. They are clowns, take a look:

get a boxer. if you want a smart, friendly dog, that will protect you, get a boxer. boxers are a little bigger but waaay friendlier. I havent seen a smarter dog listed on here than a boxer

Shi-tzus are great!!! they are small yet they are playful..i have 2 of them and they are like my babies!! We absolutely love them and wouldnt have any other kind of small dog!!
