The Vedas are the oldest texts of Sanatana Dharma. They are also the eternal truth, and existed before time itself, in the mind of Sriman Narayana (Vishnu), the Supreme Lord.

Western Scholars could not accept that the Vedanta predated their texts by such a huge time span, so they created a nonsensical theory of Aryan Invasion and assigned very incorrect dates to Hindu Texts. The Vedanta were given dates of 1500 BC-1800 BC, Srimad Bhagatam was given a date of 1st Millenium BCE to 4th Century CE, etc....

However, the astronomical content of the Vedanta & other Hindu texts, the exact markings of the positions of the planets and their accurate references to erstwhile events/things that had existed a long, long time ago (like Saraswati River) clearly proved all these assigned dates false.

As such, the Vedanta has no date.

Now, for the History of the books. At the beginning of time, Lord Narayana, decided to outline the eternal law in the Vedanta. Accordingly, He incarnated as Nara, the disciple and Narayana, as Himself, dictated the Vedanta to Nara, who also was Himself. He gave the knowledge of the Vedas to Brahma, the deva of creation as well. The language used was Sanskrit and it is the Mother of all Languages; The Language of God.

In the Krita Yuga (First Age), the Vedas were stolen by a Demon from Brahma and the Rishis . Lord Narayana incarnated as Matsya and rescued the texts.

The Vedas initially were one vast treasury of information, written seamlessly without divisions. Their profound knowledge was very difficult to comprehend. After the Matsya Avatara, The Vedas were divided into 4 Sections.

So, the Vedas consist of Samhita (Rig Veda, Yajna Veda, Atharva Veda, Sama Veda). But the Divisions of Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads are also deemed Vedic.

Now, the Vedas essentially underline that Lord Narayana is Supreme and all Demi-Gods are His servants. If any person desires Salvation, he must offer Devotional Service to Lord Narayana ONLY and no others.

However, the Vedas have also specified that if a man desires to stay on this Earth in comfort, without Spirituality, He will be free to sing hymns and ask for boons from the Demi-Gods (Shiva, Brahma, etc.). He attains mystical powers called Siddhi. However, these powers are but temporary, and even these are provided only when Lord Narayana gives permission to the Demi-Gods to do so.

So, the content of the Vedas include the Spiritual: Praise of Lord Narayana, how to attain Moksha (Salvation), Hymns to be sung in His praise & Protocols to live a Spiritual life.

The Material section of the Vedas deals with Hymns for Demi-Gods and how to communicate with them, Science of Creation, Material Sciences like Physics, Mathematics, Astronomy, Biology & Life Sciences, the art of Yoga, Ayurveda (Medicine),Astrology, Weaponry & Warfare, and numerous other topics. However, it is advised that a true seeker of knowledge ignores this section and concentrates on the spiritiual.

It will be noteworthy to mention that Lord Narayana describes Himself as one who is present in everything, including Demi-Gods like Shiva, Brahma, etc..Unfortunately, people took this to mean that even these Demi-Gods were equal to lord Narayana and started worshipping Shiva and Brahma., forming a mistaken Trinity ideology. That is why Sage Vyasa compiled other texts, Sage Sukar gave Srimad Bhagavatam and Lord Narayana incarnated as Krishna to give the Bhagavad Gita - to clear up the confusion and establish His authority as Supreme.

As time wore by, people misinterpreted the Vedas and committed many crimes. So, Lord Narayana incarnated as Buddha and mislead them by asking them to stop following the Texts. He did this because at that time, Religion was being abused and was a problem.

Srimad Bhagavatam has prophesised the coming of Lord Narayana as Buddha.

When the time was ripe for the truth to be restored, He sent Shiva as the Sage Adi Sankara, who preached a disguised form of Buddhism. He used Vedic terms to preach Buddhist Philosophy, thus enabling Atheists to accept the Vedas. This is called Advaita Vedanta Philosophy.

Finally, the grand truth was revealed through the greatest of the Philosophers. Adi Sesha, the greatest Devotee of the Lord Narayana, incarnated as Shri Ramanujacharya, and preached Vishishtadvaita, the essence of Vedic Philosophy. Thus, from Buddhism to Vishishtadvaita, it was a step-by-step restoration of authencity.

Vedas were the first texts. Hindus have many texts like Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata & Ramayana, Puranas, Divya Prabandham, Gadya Trayam, etc. It is endless, but all these texts say one thing only - Sriman Narayana is the Cause of all Causes and is the Supreme Lord.

Even western indologists like Max Muller(German) and Sir.Monier Williams (British) and a number others accept that Rg Vedha is the "Oldest Repository of human Knowledge"

The core of the Vedha is the omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, all pervasive ,all imbibisive ,Ultimate Realty is "Brahmam".Per se Brahmam has NO attributes .But when the Brahmam takes a "Saakaara Roopam" (Benevolent, Kind, helping, form called G-O-D=GOD=Eeswara, helps all "Living beings" to go up--UPWARD trajectory (Bhavana)depending upon the KARMA(actins) to raise to more intelligent and creative forms like Human beings and prayers give the "Soul" Salvation(Mukthi)

Vedas and Vedhantha, both are different--All the Westen Indologists agree that vedas are are ATLEAST 6000 years old but Indian Indologist like sri bala Gangadhara Tilak ,based on the Astronomy (not Astrology) -the positions of Constalatios(casually called as Stars) and Zodaics as described in Vedas decide that Vedas are ATLEAST 10,000 years old.Vedhantha was the last of the 6 Dharsanas which includess the "Brahma Sootram" written by Veda Vyasa some where around 500-600 B.C.E. and the earliest Gloss was written by Acarya (Great Teacher)Sankara in 2nd century A.D. and by others in later periods.

They are the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism, and are the core text or "Holy Book" so to speak. It is both teaching and verses, some of the verses are recited as prayers.

The Rig Veda is the oldest.

Different sects of Hinduism (as many different denominations as Christianity almost) interpret them somewhat differently, though some minor differences.

Some of the stories are often interpreted as symbolic for example of one struggling against the senses and is about freeing oneself from material attachments.

I am no longer definite the way you arise with that. There fairly is not any connection inside the bible to exhibit that the mark for Cain was once honestly the mark of the Beast. Considering the mark for Cain was once in order that individuals might NOT kill him.
