If someone goes to prison for the first time and does not take advantage of the opportunity to turn their life around, then they deserve for the rest of their life to be miserable.

do a lot of self reflecting on why you are in prison. own up to you short comings, communicate (if allowed ) to those you've hurt. IE. family members , telling them your sorry for the pain you've caused them.
make some major behavior changes in your life. except responsibility. improve your self, education is the key making it. most places have some kind of schooling or classes you can take. some where in the joint is a person willing to give you hand studying. resist the temptation to continue with things that put you in the joint. IE , stealing , drugs etc. let go of the bad *** attitude and try being a nice person. yea i know its tough inside of there .use your time to become a better person.

Try to get an inmate job in prison. This will give you an activity to keep your body and mind busy. It will give you contact with people outside of your cell and an income so you can buy survival necessities. It will give you a reason to have a good relationship with prison authorities, without causing the other prisoners to disrespect you.
You asked about "prison", not jail. You should take this very seriously and get prepared in advance. Many people die from prison assaults
Most importantly, have someone on the outside that cares for you and will do things for you, like put a little money into you prisoner account or run an occasional errand. Like everywhere, you need a little spending money. It may not be much at all, but $5 a month in prison goes a long ways towards making life better there. You can use it to buy vitamin pills, a better toothbrush, or save your life. The cash pocket money that you have on you when you report to prison may be credited to your prisoner account. So go in with some cash. (You can find out the rules in advance.)
You cannot do anything on the outside to help yourself while you are in prison. Repair all of your close social and family relationships before you go in. Talk to you close relationships about helping you a little when you are in prison, but do not make it a burden to them, or they will stop.
Check out the gang situation as soon as you go in. Find out what gangs are operating there. They are usually organized by race. In a gang filled prison, a loner is fair game for everyone. You may have to join a gang for self-protection. They will charge a price for their protection. The price is often that you help assault a member of a different gang to retaliate for something that happened before you got there. But, if you want protection, then you must help protect your gang. The problem is that you can get more prison time for your protection activities. Learn about gang tattoos, body markings, and signs before you go in.
Extremely important is to learn the gang territories that exist in prison. Each gang will claim and defend a specific territory in the yard, in the bunk room, etc. You can get assaulted for crossing the wrong territory. (The will assume that you came to assault them, or you are so stupid that you are an easy victim.)
The following information is quoted from an experienced prisoner:
-------------------
Above all, you must realize that you'll be a prisoner like all the others, reduced to just a number, and no better than an illiterate crack ‘ho or white trailer trash.
Never, EVER become involved in gambling. It’s a death trap, as sure as walking into an Aryan fest with name badge that says zog.
NEVER involve yourself with punks. Do not have sex with punks, do not associate with those who have sex with punks, etc. Many an inmate has been killed by a jealous boyfriend. This may not seem like the shiny happy egalitarian thing to do, but believe me, neither is dying.
NEVER invoke debts you cannot repay. It is best not to invoke any debts period. When you first enter any institution, you will be approached with 2-4-1 offers. Meaning that the person will front you 1 item (pack of cigs, commissary food, whatever) but you will have to repay them two. This is a classic trap for inexperienced inmates. If you smoke, quit. If you want items from the commissary, etc. wait until you have money on your books, or you’re in a position with your prison job that you can run your own hustle, and have items to barter with. The basic rule, is to NEVER take ANYTHING on credit. This will get you killed or seriously injured or TURNED OUT and pimped to pay your bill real fast.
NEVER use drugs in prison, of any type. I will make an exception for Marijuana [ his words ], because it’s not addictive, but again, ONLY smoke it if you can pay for it. Take NOTHING ON CREDIT.
NEVER collaborate with the hacks against a fellow inmate, and NEVER give any information up about another inmate.
If you are arrogant to other prisoners, you'll alienate them and create many enemies. This could prove fatal.
Always be respectful and polite to other prisoners, regardless of how weird they may act or dress. First, because you don't know who or what they are, and second, because respect and personal dignity are the most valued possessions left to a prisoner. [Comment: If other prisoners do not respect your ability to defend and retaliate, you will be used and abused. ]
Never tell another prisoner what to do or give anyone orders. Don't tell the noisy ones in the law library to be quiet. Prisoners deeply resent being bossed around by another prisoner. Their likely response -- even to a polite request -- is, "What are you, a ******' cop?"
Never stare at another prisoner for more than a second or two. He may be a walking powder keg, set off by an intrusive stare. He may either assault you on the spot or wait until darkness. Even if he doesn't kill you outright, your face will never look the same again.
Avoid anyone offering to “take you under their wing” or help you out. Generally, they are booty bandits, or Jailhouse pimps running a well thought out and practiced game against you.
---------------------
Whatever time you have left before going in, you should spend all your effort getting ready.
I would say good luck, but you would do better to take a quick self-defense class. Find an instructor that is willing to help you get ready.
