A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.

I'm especially curious about the religious stance on it, seeing as how most religions claim that morals and ethics originate with them.

I agree... man IS in a poor way because so many are restrained by fear of punishment... why else would they try to use that on us Nons as often as they do? Trying to put the Fear of God into us or Scare the Hell out of us... either way, it shows that is how they live. Those that act like this towards outsiders prove that they only do the Right the thing because it might get them something more later......... Meanwhile, they treat the people next to them as less than human. Yes, man IS in a poor way.

I believe morals come about through society. Those who claim it doesn't, I would like to point out that in the Bible, it's all right to own slaves, sell your daughter to some unknown man, etc.... If we were to do these things today, we would not be considered to have "Morals"... It would be said that we are trying to take away the freedoms of another. It is society that decides what is Moral... and obviously, that is completely relative to the times we live in compared to ancient times.

Many philosophers have delved into the issue of secular morality, or ethics without a god. I'm not religious, but I am right on board with Mr. Einstein... man would indeed be in a poor way... and many are.

Yes, I do agree. That's one of the reasons I joined the Ethical Society of St. Louis. We believe that ethics is a matter of rational choices, not reward or punishment by a deity. It is good to live in a world that respects ethical values like compassion, justice, honesty. Therefore, it is rational to promote those values, and to live by them ones self.
