Is there any thing i can do to discourage the dog from getting in the garbage. Should i call the dog catcher since they wont tie their dog?

Sorry didnt know what category to put this in!

I do put the garbage out on the day its supposed to be picked up. Asking my neighbors to keep thier dog under control isnt whining in my book.

I put the garbage out the night before its supposed to be picked up because the truck runs about 6am. The dog gets into it over night. I dont care for the dog running loose but i would think that since their dog not only gets into my garbage but also theirs that they would tie it up until after the garbage is picked up!

Tell them that you set up a camera to try to find out who was knocking over the trash cans, and that it is their dog. Offer to show them them tape if they like. They denied it was their dog before but maybe they honestly don't think it's theirs, and showing them the proof will show them otherwise.

Explain to them tactfully that it's in their best interest to control their dog. If the dog is running loose and getting into your garbage, chances are he's getting into other people's garbage too. This is very dangerous because sooner or later he's going to eat something that could be fatal (chocolate, sharp piece of metal, household cleaning products, etc.) Be very careful when you say this--make sure you don't make it sound like a threat, because it isn't. It's just a fact, those are the types of things that you might find in people's trash and it could kill a dog to eat any of them.

If that doesn't work, go to your local pet store. There are sprays you can get that are supposed to repel dogs. Maybe one of those will keep the dog away from your garbage.

You have left out a lot of information - what type of garbage retainer does your city/town use? It should be dog proof on it's own. Secondly, it is usually illegal to have dogs running around neighborhoods if in the USA. There could be many people at fault in this little scenario: 1. you for not properly containing your garbage, 2. your city or town for not providing correct garbage containers, 3. your neighbors. A nice chat with your neighbor about the dog behavior would be wonderful explaining to them that garbage can be deadly to their lovely animal as it contains sharp can lids, broken glass, not to mention rotten foods, etc. If one through 3 do not work, then call animal control. Kindly explain that you love dogs and do not want any harm to come to their animal.

If you have a dog, it is your responsibility to control your dog. Your neighbors should not have to go out and purchase extra items in order to keep your trash from being invaded by dogs or cats. I too have a neighbors who purposely disregard the rules and let their dogs go. The reason I was told was "hey they are only labs and won't hurt anything" . Every trash day I am picking up trash or I see the people on my street with trash in their yards.
The issue is a lack of respect and responsibility on your neighbor's part. I have talked to them and was told that running the streets was their exercise. I thought, these people need pets like I need a spitting cobra.

Dogs shouldnt be running around freely to begin with!!!!!! Im sorry but why should we have to attend to the dogs needs when it isnt even our dog. People just dont have respect for other people anymore. Thats the problem. If the dog keeps doing it. SHOOT the dam thing. Thats how you take care of that problem. Maybe next time the neighbors will keep them tied up!!!

Simply show them the video tape that you have of their dog getting into your garbage. Ask them again to please keep their dog confined to their yard. Call your city hall and find out what the dog laws are for you city. Next time the dog gets in your trash pick the trash up dump it in your neighbors front yard, call the police to report a dog at large. You could also try getting a trash can with a lid that fits or locks on securely.

i built a nice looking wooden box and put it at the end of my driveway and my garbage goes in the box , This way it keeps dogs and the bears out of the garbage, Your neighbour is irresponsible in the care of their dog, The poor dog could be hit by a car running at large. But it is pretty hard trying to get others to be more responsible , Show them the video/ one last conversation with them and call animal control , You could be saving the dogs life by forcing them to confine their dog.

To start with, you can confront your neighbors with a copy (yes, copy, so you have one still) of the video, and offer to let them have it. Tell them that if they continue to let their dog run free, you WILL report it, and the issue will be taken care of legally. Pet owners that aren't responsible enough to keep control of their animals or take proper care of their animals can get themselves in a whole world of hurt, so if having another conversation with your neighbors doesn't remedy the problem, then call Animal Control or your local police/sheriff's department, depending on who will handle the situation there as it varies from place to place. Discuss it with them and tell them you have a video of your neighbor's dog at large, raiding garbages.

Take the video to the police or animal control. Let the neighbors pay a hefty fine a time or two. Maybe that will give them an incentive to control their dogs.

You can call the Animal Control and they will go over and talk to the neighbors. AC may even want to see the video. They can be fined for not keeping their dog confined to their property and most likely will be given a warning.

contact the garbage company and find out how they feel about scattered rubbish,do they send u letters about this,in hoping they do ,mayb u can report the neighbour and its dog to the garbage co..you pay rates for these sevices and you are not geting it bcos of naive dog owners..if our mailbox is below a certain height the posty either throws it on the ground or takes it back to the main postal office.we have neighbours kids that wreck others properties,so the postal service will send you a letter of advise,so should the garbo co. to your neighbour.oh and animal control as sugested by others..
