I don't think so last time I traveled.

No airline requires you to have a passport at all. They only check your passport for two reasons:
1) to prove you are the person on the ticket;
2) to satisfy themselves that you are allowed to enter the destination country because they would be liable for a fine (and perhaps the cost of your return ticket) if immigration turned you back.
So to answer your question, Qantas does not require a machine readable passport to fly with them. Unless they feel not having one will not let you into the destination country legally.

hi there I work for BA in check in and its not the airline that requires the machine readable passport its the country or countries that you are flying to require a machine readable passport its purely because embassies and consulates can no longer guarantee the safety and securiities of non machine readable passports as they are so easy to forge. If you are flyinf with QF and going to the USA you will 100% need a machine readable passport if your passport was issued before october 2005 and is non machine readable u will need to obtain a visa to travel or you will need a machine readable and the new passports will come with microchip too then no visa will be required. Also most countries immigration swipe your passport upon entry into the country so machine readable would be advisable.
If you are travelling from London to OZ BA handle QF and we have to swipe your passports at checkin to send your visa details to canberra before to depart to ensure your passport data matches your visa to enter OZ.
My advise to u is if you dont have a machine readable I would get one as it will be less hassle at the airport and at immigration where ever u go also there is no need to obtain visas for countries you visit if you did not have a non machine readable passport.
I will be happy to advise you further if you have any other questions
hope this helps

Just take in your normal passport.
If you are really worried then phone Qantas Airline or check out their website.

I don't know, but you may find that the country to which you are flying will require such a passport if you are to be permitted to enter it.
