I want to work with a video using windows movie maker but when I try to import my video I can't do it. Is it possible to just have one video-friendly file like mpeg or something like that? When I double click on the dvd icon the video plays, but when I click on one of these sub files, I can't get anything to play. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks.

you have to recode the VOB.

if its a dvd movie, you'll need to "rip" the VOB's off the disk onto your computer. (this is considered piracy UNLESS you own the DVD)

DVD shrink 3.2. is wonderful, scalable and FAST

one of these programs should convert it for you
(they might be kinda slow though)

Easy VOB

Nero Recode from nero suite 7 is nice for recoding if you ask me.
its wonderful, scalable and FAST too.
(it makes MP4 files instead of mpeg or avi. MP4 files are not easily editable though)

movie maker SUCKS!!!! and will have an extremely hard time handling such a large movie file anyway.

(even if you own the DVD editing the movie is considered a copyright violation)

you might as well find adobe premier of even after effects to do your editing.

good luck

Videos in VOB/IFO/BUP are mastered DVD Video files in MPEG2 format.

Normally to make a video, you edit them in a more raw format like AVI. Then after you finish editing the raw footage, your master them to make the final DVD-Video format (VOB/IFO/BUP).

Windows Movie Maker pretty much sucks. I'd recommend any other program but that like ones from Pinnacle, Magix, Adobe, etc. The "so called" video editing programs in Roxio and Nero tend to be a too primitive and hard to use for me.
