A great program to get started is to have everyone save their coins for a year. Cash them all in on December 31st, and make out one big check on January 1st. A few years ago, I was able to send 900.00 to the Demelza House Children's Hospice in Kent, England. An idea, I'm very happy to have come up with. I do it every year, and it's the best way for everyone to donate, without saying "I don't have the money".
Coins are easy to come by, all it takes is to drop them in a jar. I've even got the guys at the post office saving for me. Next year's check should be lovely.

Organise some sort of fundraising function. A ball or just a plain dance, trivia night, karaoke night - get businesses to donate prizes and collect entry fees. Most businesses are willing to help out in some way if it's for charity, especialy if you aknowledge their contribution - it's good advertising for them.
