I like the concept of vying to be more just, more patient, more caring, more loving, more [you insert the virtue], both as individuals and as societies. It's win-win for everyone.
Over competition in sports has made a mockery of our love for excitement and skill as well as our ludicrous making of talented humans into gods.
Over competition in capitalism results in gross materialism and consumerism and is wrecking our planet home and leaving millions in misery.
There are no winners in a war. GOD!!!!!!!!!
Evolution, so far, is not a conscious process, unlike the others.

There's a difference between recreational competition and the ones you just mentioned for the stakes in these competitions aren't really grave. Unlike these:
Capitalism - Mass gain/loss of profit
War - I believe you already know the consequences whether win or lose.
Evolution - It is neccessary in order to adapt to changes in the environment.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to a local Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournament

Survival is more akin to competence not competition . and ironically enough competition and ego may some day be the downfall of the human race as we know it . I say do away with competition and replace it with a practical competence and we will all be better off .
peace and happiness

Competition is simply the striving to exhault oneself over another so your question does have a cosmic place in the scheme of things. Before we were there was a rebellion against God in the heavenlies where a third of the Host of Gods kingdom were decieved into believing that there was no free will and that God was authoritarian...this was done in an effort to overthrow God's government and it was done out of hatred, covetousness and greed. Satan was first Lucifer and thought to gain the same position as Jesus in the Heavenlies and therefore wanted to grasp at that ranking. Since the earth and all that was in it was made for, by and through the Son of God, after Lucifer was cast down, he continued his pursuit to take what belonged to God...that is where Angels (the term has several meanings) and Demons (the term has several meanings) chose sides so to speak. Angels are ministering spirits and demons are temptors - while Jesus stands as our mediator before God, Satan stands as our accuser so you see the competition is for our souls. Jesus humbled Himself to save us while Satan thought to exhault himself and brought ruin, rebellion and iniquity.
Ezekiel 28:12-16
You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering:...
The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.
You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you...
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created.
Till iniquity was found in you.
By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, and you sinned;
Therefore I cast you as a profane thing...
That is what we do...I can see competing to concur an event like endurance swimming or performance and even competative sports if done with sportsmanship...but it is never or rarely instigated in the scheme of things to exhault each other or to lift each other up very often and not applauded or rewarded either. Like Satan..everything has become about the self...me, me, me..I, I, I and so forth. Even in this venue...trying to win best answer. I wish they had a catagory for longest...LOL. ~J~
