Find menu "Auto Correct" in the Auto Correct tab fill the "Replace" textbox with 1/2 and then go to Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. Find ½ and then copy it. Paste in the With textbox and click OK.

Now every you type 1/2 you'll get ½

Hold down the Alt key and type 0189 on the NUMERIC Keypad.

Word should normally convert 1/2 to the correct character unless you have turned it off. (when you press the spacebar, punctuation or ENTER after typing 1/2)

actually if you type in 1/2 it automatically converts it to ½ on mine copy anyway

or you could go to insert ribbon(?) on the far right and click on "Symbols" at the bottom of that little box that opens it should say "more symbols"

that should bring up the symbols window there you can find all the symbols that exist

personally I found the ½ character by changing the "from" drop down box (its at the bottom to the right (to the right of Character code)) to "ASCII (decimal)"
I found it near the bottom of where all the characters are displayed

hope that helps ya

type

1/2
then highlight 1
right click
font
select superscript

repeat for 2

now go to the free section of my website and download open office and it would have been much easier (auto) and free
