Personally, I am good with my one wonderful wife but... why does it matter if groups of folks were to marry? Is there a non religous pragmatic reason that this should be forbidden?

I don't see anything wrong with it, or polyandry either, and I don't think it should be the government's business how many people one marries, as long as they all know about each other and there is no deception involved, and for that matter, it's no ones business what the sex of the person one marries is.

I know that some people that practice polygamy get around that law by just not legally marrying more than one partner, but calling themselves husband and wife anyway.

Remembering some of my ex husbands I wish they had had more than one wife.

Well, the biological imperative is to procreate.

And we form society to facilitate the imperative.

A polygamous society leaves many males biologically disenfranchised. Which in turn makes them less committed to the society. So there is a certain logic to a social injunction against polygamy.

That being said. Anyone who thinks polygamy is illegal in America is just tragically Democrat. You can move in with as many women as you like. They can all have children for you. And while it's true only your first wife gets alimony, every last one of them can sue you for child support.

Polygamy means that the rich man has many wives, and there are none available for the poor. Furthermore, If a man has many wives, he can not love each one of them, as much he would love only one. This means that a man with many wives could become a person who does not truly love all these women, because he can not satisfy so many sexually and emotionally, and they tend to become mere property to him for his sexual satisfaction. Now what about the poor man (the young)? He has nothing to warm his loneliness.

For Christians, they are directed to have only one.

I have enough trouble pleasing one woman. There's no way I could meet all of the emotional needs of two, let alone more!

Believe me, when I watched a documentary on one of the few Mormon polygamist communes left in Utah, it scared me--not because of the fundamentalism, but just watching the strain it put on the family, and seeing the bitter rivalry between the wives. It's not the bedroom fantasy that we jokingly try to make it out to be.

It actually doesn't bother me much. What consenting adults want to do with their lives is their own business. The only kind of Polygamy I'm against is from the few sects of Mormonism that force young girls to marry someone they don't love and without their consent. Most polygamous relationships are not that way, though.

I personally don't think it'd help my life out at all, but to each their own!

Polygamy....

First off, the U.S. government gets involved with marriage when it shouldn't. It is a stupid waste of resources, causes problems that shouldn't be and have nothing to do with "governce" and needs to be checked. The founding fathers didn't have marriage regulation in mind when they wrote the constitution I'm sure.

Secondly, I think polygamy is more of a HUMAN custom than a biblical one. I think God PREFER's you have one wife. Like he would PREFER NO ONE get divorced...

Sadly, we are kind of stubborn.

ABRAHAM had one wife....

Because young men that don't regularly get "some" tend to become more violent within a society. Far to often this violence become organized. Polygamy only works well in a society that tends to kill off a much higher percentage of men than women.

It has been and probably will be practiced at one level or another even King Solomon and King David had multiple wives and concubines. It contributed to the most gut wrenching ordeals for both of them. God has put His seal of wisdom on having one spouse at a time. It is impossible to be truly committed to more than one and that is not fair to the one who is eventually slighted. Also it usually elevates sibling rivalry to nose-bleed levels.

I think polygamy is ok if the husband and wife are dissatisfied with the marriage and choose out of their own consent to spend their lives with different people.

But that is theoretical scenario. In reality, the concept of polygamy is abused.

Maybe anyone who wants more than one spouse should ask what if my spouse wanted another few Hubands?

For equality reasons - If a couple agree to allow for example the husband to have another three wives, what if the wife wants another three husbands?

Could eight people live together screwing each other?
