Do you see marriage to your spouse as a garment? A garment hides your body, and a spouse hides your secrets (well, a good one anyway). What do you think? How does it make you feel?

"The Prophet of Islam, peace be upon him, said, "Women are the twin halves of men". The Qur'an emphasizes the essential unity of men and women in a most beautiful simile:

They (your wives) are your garment and you are a garment for them. (2:187)

Just as a garment hides our nakedness, so do husband and wife, by entering into the relationship of marriage, secure each other's chastity. The garment gives comfort to the body; so does the husband find comfort in his wife's company and she in his. "The garment is the grace, the beauty, the embellishment of the body, so too are wives to their husbands as their husbands are to them."

Islam does not consider woman "an instrument of the Devil", but rather the Qur'an calls her muhsana - a fortress against Satan because a good woman, by marrying a man, helps him keep to the path of rectitude in his life. It is for this reason that marriage was considered by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, as a most virtuous act. He said: "When a man marries, he has completed one half of his religion." He enjoined matrimony on Muslims by saying: "Marriage is part of my way and whoever keeps away from my way is not from me (i.e. is not my follower)." The Qur'an has given the raison d'être of marriage in the following words:

And among His signs is this, that He has created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them; and He has put love and mercy between you. Verily in that are signs for those who reflect. (30:21)"

Yes, it is very beautiful. The pure religion of Islam is very beautiful.

My hope for the ummah this Ramadan is for all Muslims to wake up to the beautiful truth they have at hand by opening their heart fully to the full sublime truth of their deen and embracing that with their heart and not just from reading or speech. If non-Muslims could do the same that would be very beautiful. What a peace of mind that would bring if the heart and mind was fully in tawheed. What peace for all that would be if all would have their heart and mind fully in tawheed.

Thanks :)
Salam.

Your quotations from the interpretation of the holy Qur'an are right.Marriage as a garment on that verse is only a comparison or allusion or analogy in the muslim theology..It is called also that marriage is a part of filling of our faith.By marriage we can control our lusts or desires well.We do not need approaching adultery which can give sin to us..The husband can pour down and share the happiness and sadness with his wife.

i've got self assurance a lot of what Sean says suitable here. the marriage is our initiation on our path to returning to God. Our souls are woman and changeable (the Son of guy) although the groom is Spirit and eternal (the Son of God). we would opt to be purified in clothing that have not have been given any seam between us and God so a concepts as theory is going. The ascension is the step that we bypass via to unite with Spirit and end our sojourn indoors the geographical regions of time.

Well said, and even though I'm not Muslim, I am completely behind Islam's treatment of women and their rights in the religion. Stay Proud!

Hm. My marriage garment is either very holey or like mummy's bandages. I can't decide. Sometimes I feel like I've tamed a wild beast.
