depends on what you need to do with your photos
the only benifit is that they are free, but they have limited editing features. I use photoshop and substitutes all of the freeware

irfanview is a graphics viewer for all types of files and it also does other stuff.
picasa is a photo manager, image editor and it also does other stuff.
I use picasa, usually for finding/organizing photos and viewing them. My wife uses picasa for most of her photo editing.
I use PhotoShop for almost all my photo editing.
