I'm having a huge problem understanding the concept of original sin. If we were created in the image of God, and God is perfect in all his ways, then how can we possibly be lowlife scuzballs at birth? Sorry but that makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.

religion must earn your support and money so in the infinitesimal wisdom of the early church they determined that the sin of Adam and Eve was inherited to all mankind thus creating the need for early attention through baptism and insuring the future of the lively hood and power of the church . the earlier they start on one as a youth the more profound is the indoctrination even if just for the opportunity of pedophile priests as it were . sorry I'm not actually looking to bash religion these things just keep coming to mind.

Have a look in the mirror, you'll see your image reflected back at you, but it won't be perfect. It'll be smaller, there will be distortions in the glass changing the image subtly, left and right are reversed. And when you try to touch the image you'll feel cold glass, not warm flesh. And if you step away from the image it no longer exists but the original does. So an image is not an exact reproduction of the original. So, while we're created in God's image, we are flawed, imperfect, but we're aware of some of our imperfections and we know the master of our image, God, who has revealed Himself to us, and striving to to attain His perfection is goodness.

Original sin is mankind's first deliberate step away from the creator. They had only one commandment: don't eat the forbidden fruit. We on the other hand now have ten commandments, and carry Adam's original sin because of their folly. But God, in His saving Grace and Mercy sent Jesus and the Holy Ghost to provide the way through baptism and His examples to forgive original sin.

Your not alone. Others have a problem with this concept.

Here is my opinion. (Apologies to the Catholics and some Fundamentalists for not agreeing with you but I love you guys anyway)

Definition: Sin is both a separation from God and the things that we do or are done to us that exacerbate this separation.

Adam and Eve (who symbolically stand for the first spiritual beings that worshiped and fellowshiped with God) decided it would be better to be like God than to worship God. As a consequence they and their children were separated from God and thrown out of paradise. Since all mankind from that time on is not in paradise it follows that we have inherited this condition of separation from God. While it may be technically correct to call this original sin, to read more into it than that is IMHO one of the places where the historic church has gone down a theological dead end.

Original Sin is another way of saying imperfection. We bear the mark (imperfection) of the ORIGINAL SIN. God created Adam and Eve to be perfect, put them in the Garden told them not to eat of a certain tree. They defied his will / broke the law and that resulted in a corruption of their being.

Instead of just killing Adam and Eve right there for breaking the law, he started the plan of redemption that brought Christ into the world so that they and we might have again what we lost in the fall.

We ORIGINALLY WERE created in the image of God, after the fall however, that image is distorted.

We are lowlife scuzzballs because we have the CAPACITY FOR evil and the DESIRE to choose evil. We have freewill, but not true liberty as our DESIRE is for evil.

Why do you think we are lowlife scuzballs at birth?
That is not how the God of the Bible sees us.
When God created Adam and Eve, He said His creation is good.
When they rebelled against God and believed God's enemy, the devil, instead of believing God, sin entered the world.
All mankind is born with this sin nature, inherited from Adam.
We are sinners.
It keeps us from having a relationship with God.
But God does not leave us that way----to satisfy His justice, He sent God the Son, Jesus, to pay our sin debt, by His death and resurrection. This is God's mercy towards all who believe. We can be cleansed of our sin and have peace with God!

Adam was created in the image of God - Holy and happy, but he had free will. God made the covenant of life with Adam. Adam would be rewarded with life if he obeyed God perfectly or be punished with death if he disobeyed. Since Adam disobeyed this brought the wrath and curse of God. Adam represented the whole human race when he disobeyed, therefore we are all born guilty and sinful. This sinful nature we inherited from Adam is called original sin.

When Adam and Eve were created, God looked at everything that He had made and said that it was good. He placed Adam and Eve in the garden and gave them free will. He told them to eat the fruit from any tree that they wanted but just not the tree of knowledge of good and evil because if they did, they would die. They decided to disobey therefore, they understood what good and evil was and they died. We inherited this sin nature too. We rebel against God and disobey too. This is what sin is.

Then, Jesus came to die for us in our place for the sins that we commit. All we have to do for this free gift is to repent and accept Jesus as our Lord and our Savior.

It satisfies the need we all have of being rescued.
I am coming to the conclusion that the answer is more esoteric than we could possibly believe. Several factors need to be taken into account.
The acknowledgment that we are not perfect
The definition of time
How we understand what sin is.
How is original sin different from ordinary sin.
why we can't fix this mess ourselves
not knowing the future.
and discovering the eyes of our minds.

to name some off the top of my head.

Nobody means you are a lowlife scuzzball at birth, they mean that you are born with the inability not to sin. We all will sin, it does not mean we are lowlife's, just that we are sinners. Some would argue that we are capable of anything, but that can be countered with only if our environment teaches it to us. Also, to give you an idea that we are born with the desire to sin, look at a baby who is born. You never have to tell a baby to do something bad, they do it on their own, but you do have to teach them good. It is not that the baby is bad, just that he or she will sin. It is then up to parents to give them the guidance to do what is right.

We are in the image of God. That means we have the ability to do as God does. We can be like God in our actions.
To be like God we have to be more than we are as just people. we have to be more.....God has to see more than us in flesh. God has to see us in Christ.
Our nature has the ability to sin....we all sin but can be perfected through Christ Jesus.
We are all forgiven of sin. Christ died for all of us.
We choose to either live as God See's us or to live in a sinful, flesh state. It is our choice.
