It depends on the usage of the software and different people. Your question really gets large scale. While for me, I would like to say DVD Ripper for Mac is one of Amazing software. I think you should take into consideration your hobbies. Are you into music and collect mp3's? MP3 Collector from collectorz.com is great for organizing your collection, and not just mp3's.
My point is that it is best to have the need first, then find a program that is best for that need, not the other way around.

my oceanographic sound wave detector/ radar/ sea floor scanner. But I don't know if you could count an oceanographer as common when it comes to software.
