Of course in cases of self-defense.

It is not whether you are christian or Hindu or Muslim to kill a person as a defence person. Even an aethist would feel against killing. I hate the notion which is very common (atleast among Indians)that Christians(esp Europeans) are Peace lovers and rest of the people are Barbarians(Many a times i have heard people saying being a Christian how could you do it?).

If you look around the world, half of the killings are done by Christians directly or indirectly(Ex: war in Iraq, Afganistan and most of the wars on earth).
So its all about a person's personal cultural experience and evolved opinion whether to kill or not(within law).
There are lots or examples of people who religiously refrained from killing but professionally do.

Do you remember holy wars?
It was even believed that St. Francis Xavier is the one who asked for Inquisition which led to the killing or innocent Indians belong to Concolim village in Goa*(Refer the Book Holy Warriors by Edna Fernandes).
So, If you think your country and people are above your Religion, lawfull(in a war)killings are justified.

Yes, it is OK.

God gave us Human Government for the time anyway, and we must endeavor to dispense those things that Governments dispense.

The first poster says that Christians cannot kill except in Self Defense... She is quite wrong. If you were a King and didn't punish criminals, God would hold you to account for that. There are commandements in the Bible that specify what crimes people should be killed in punishement for. One of them is murder.

Of course, killing people is something to be undertaken seriously. It is a serious matter for a Government to deprive people of life whether it be in punishment or in war... So, just because you are at war, you do not get a blank check so to speak. You do have a job to do, but it must be done with conscience.

Well, properly translated, the scriptural prohibition is on MURDER. Judicially ordered execution, military action, and self defense or defense of others... THESE THINGS ARE NOT MURDER.

The scriptures never support avoiding ones military obligation, rather, Luke 3:14 records the instruction of John the baptist to a group of soldiers: “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.” Nothing was said about military service being "wrong" for a person who wanted to follow God's will.

You will find that there are many strands of christianity and some of them will support killing in certain situations, while many of them will not.

The strands that support the killing of others tend to be fundamentalist and prescriptive (meaning believers do not have a choice of what to think: they must believe in whatever that strand of christianity dictates).

My view is that it is NOT okay for law enforcement officers to kill except in self defence (and genuine cases where this is necessary are rare); and that execution is wrong full stop.

I contend that ALL KILLING --except for self-defense or to protect the defenseless-- IS WRONG, regardless of how justifiable it may appear to be according man-made laws.

And whoever carries out such ORDERS TO KILL another person under man-made laws will ultimately have to be accountable for his/her decisions and actions in the end.

We must give Peace a chance... and end all wars. Now.

Peace be with you!

Please define "OK."

Do you mean, is it moral? Or do you mean is it ethical?

A Buddhist would say that anyone who kills is affected adversely by the act of killing or any act of violence. Just look at how many military and even police experience post traumatic stress.

If you examine the lives, thoughts and expressions of those whom you mention, you might learn some very interesting lessons. I'm thinking of the first few chapters of The Dirty Dozen by E.M. Nathanson. I happened to see it on the shelves the other day so I checked it out.

Absolutely.

If the Christian is personally opposed to killing, they should avoid careers that have a distinctive likelihood of taking another human life.

You want to know the career that is most likely to take another human life? Railroad engineer--statistically they kill one person for every year they spend driving a train. Definitely a bad job for someone opposed to killing.

christianity is a whole separate entity and will always have the same bible-based beliefs despite the changing environment+society (which includes law enforcement).

killing is not permitted other than for self-defense, as far as i know. whether or not the law allows it is irrelevant.

Yes it is OK. God is the one who started the death penalty law and His view on it didn't change with Jesus. Law enforcement killings are not considered murder by God.
