Our family pet was left in a car for around an hour by someone who took her for a ride. When we found her she was lethargic but somewhat resonsive. I could not get her to drink or even eat so I put her in a bath of room temperature water and cooled her. she was ok within an hour. Should I get her to a Vet? She seams fine now?

Oh, and no, I will never let that happen again.....

She is fine now.... The lethargy was gone soon after the bath... I put her in room temp.."luke warm water and slowly added cool water to bring down her temp... to the animal abuse hate monger.... This is a family pet treated as a family member... absentmindedness could have killed our belocved pet and I posted this so others would know what to do in a situation such as this..

You cannot always reach a Vet...

I'm from Australia so I'm not sure how hot 103 temp is.
we use Celsius down here and 103 Celsius would mean that we would all be dead and the earth would be burnt to a crisp.
any way i assuming it was really hot
the dog probably was over heated and dehydrated.
i would only go to the vet if you can't get her to drink water,be cause the vet will but her on a intravenous(no idea how to spell it) drip to re hydrate her.
keep an eye on her for the next 24 hrs though even if she seems fine for now.
and don't forget to thank your lucky stars. it could have been very serious.

I found the chow mix we have suffering from the heat & what you did was exactly what my vet told me to do - good for you! I would recommend getting her checked over just to be sure all is well. And, you will find she will not be able to tolerate high temps in the future. Boo (my dog) comes inside if it's over 75-80 degrees.
And before anyone criticizes me, I found my dog in the middle of the road having seizures. A neighbor went away for 3 weeks & thought she could take care of herself like a wild animal does. No food, water or shelter. So she became mine or they were going to jail.
Hope your dog is alright & just keep an eye on her during hot weather.

I can't even imagine that because even with the windows opened and inch or two, it's been proved time and time again that if the temp is near 100, it only takes 10 minutes for the temp to get to 135 inside the car. 135 will cause brain damage and often death.
How did your dog survive at all if the temp was already 103 and the windows CLOSED?

I print out some things to take with me shopping that hopefully make people think.

It says:
"You have left your dog in your car, parked on HOT pavement with the windows cracked a small amount.
It only takes 10 minutes for the temperature in your car to reach 135 degrees in these conditions. I have called the local humane society and I hope they arrive before you leave this parkig lot. There is a stiff fine for this and you need to pay."
I hope it makes them think about taking their dog with them in extreme weather.
Good luck to you and your dog.

You did the right thing. Now,just make sure she stays cool, because sometimes dogs who have had heat exhaustion will all of a sudden develop a high temperature again.Keep her head and belly cool.Make sure she has a fan blowing on her and give her ice cubes to lick in addition to water.feed her small amounts of boiled ,cooled chicken with a little salt.If she'still OK by tomorrow at this time, then you should be out of the woods. You should call your vet in the morning just to see what they say.Good luck, and be careful with who you let your dog go for rides with!

Hi, If this ever happens again put her in the bath tub with cool water that will work a lot faster. Make sure you have fresh cool water out for her because she will drink a lot of water now. You are lucky this time if she would of been in that car for another 20 minutes she wouldn't of made it!!!! The person who did this to your dog needs their A S S Kicked and Kicked HARD!!!! SORRY but things like this upsets me.
People need to think before they do stupid things.Give your dog a Big Hug for me!!!

I think you (narrowly) avoided a tragedy. If she seems fine, she probably is, and if she's now eating and drinking, I'd say the outlook for her is good. However, if you're the slightest bit worried, or if she seems "off' in any way, yes, I'd see the vet. Or at least, call the vet and explain what happened.

It's so hard even to think about this. Humans who get sunstroke, get very ill or die. To be so long in a car in high heat, may be damaging to your dog, even though she is alive. I would take her to the vet to get a check-up and tell the whole story. Please don't let others take your dog out in the summer. Some people don't have the foresight.

(I volunteer every summer in an Vet Clinic) One thing you can do, is a skin pinch test. Pinch the skin on her neck and back to see if the elasticity is normal if it snaps back into place pretty normally than she is probably okay. If the skin snaps back relatively slow, I would suggest taking her to your vet, because she probably needs an IV to get fluids under the skin. Good luck!

Take her temperature rectally. If it is 101.5 to 102.5, just work on getting water into her. As far as the answer aobut cold water to drop an overheated dog's temperature, it will kill her from the shock.
